Motete LECSA Parish Location • Mountains of Botha Bothe District (Population: 109,139: 2006 censors) • MoteteConstituency (Population: 30,363: 2006 censors) • SekhobeCommunity Council-B06 (Population: 3,874 [1,957 males and 1,917 females] district www.bos.gov.ls • Villages such as: Motete** (parish headquarters), Mahlekefane,* Soloane,* Meeling,* Lehloara,* Mahateng . • Asterisk denotes a church with a school. Motete has a primary school and a post-primary.
Social and Economic Situation • On NAPA Economic Vulnerability Classifications places Motete within Zone II: Mountains • “This is the least densely settled part of the country and communities in this area tend to be more isolated from services and markets. • Livelihoods in this area are dependant on food crops and livestock. 55% of the population in this area is poor. People in this area are mostly pastoralists. • During years of drought, they exchange livestock for food cereals to supplement their food requirements.” • (NAPA) (10)
Social Cohesion Vulnerabilities • Lack of trained leadership • LECSA has not had a Resident Minister nor Trained Evangelist for the last 13 years • Consequence: • No trained full-time overall leadership • Deficiency in knowledge supply • Low morale in the functioning of the churches in the area • Further, even though schools in this area which normally have teachers as trained leadership, lack of overall full-time parish leadership still amounts to vulnerability. This is because, in such as these, church plays a pivotal role in social cohesion and development through its holistic mission institutions including, education and health facilities.
Goal • The critical issue which the project intends to resolve is severe poverty. In particular, on basic social issues such as: • Human dignity (Gender parity, male and female hygiene and nutrition ) • Leadership skills • Poverty is described as the state of lacking resources and or knowledge or skills to live comfortably. • See: Della Thompson, Ed. Justification • This project augments relevant Seminary, Lesotho Evangelical Church in Southern Africa, and National Development Strategies and Policies such as:

Justification: Lesotho’s National Vision • The fourth component of Lesotho’s National Vision 2020 component “2.3.4 A Healthy and Well Developed Human Resource Base” with emphasis on: “The people will also be highly careful about hygiene and proper nutrition….Lifelong learning,… will be the main focus in the education. • The above is also elaborated in the ”National Strategic Development Plan (2012/13 – 2016/17: 146)in the following manner: • “Create awareness and advocate for male involvement in gender and sexual and reproductive health programmes....Support non-formal education and skills for herd-boys and domestic workers.”
Objectives The Project will have achieved its goal if it: • Promotes knowledge on gender rights as human rights with emphasis on the importance of reproductive health and basic skills on the use of sanitary towels for girls in the catchment area • Educate communities of the catchment area on the importance of gender parity as a family and social cohesion mechanism • Provide basic leadership skills to local community leaders
EXPECTED PROJECT RESULT • At the completion of this project: • Girls should be able to articulate the importance of sanitary towels, and demonstrate knowledge of their use • Adolescent males shall explain the importance of male circumcision • Community leaders should be able to explain the importance of gender parity as a component in family and social cohesion • Community leaders should demonstrate knowledge of basic leadership skills

Implementing Agent and Management of Project • The Project is Directed by: Rev Rabasotho Maqebo Petrus Moshoeshoe, Deputy Director of Morija Theological Seminary (Research and Teaching: in Biblical Studies, Missiology, and Planning) • Planning is the responsibility of: • At the Seminary: Missiology, and Strategic Planning Class under the leadership of the supervisor mentioned above. • At parish level: Motete LECSA Consistory led by Rev `M`amapetla Ellen Mapetla,in conjunction with Qalo Presbytery Committee led by Rev Eunice Motete, Presbytery Moderator. • The Seminary is responsible for policy guidance and assurance in all the activities undertaken to promote education in and outside its campus

E. Project Beneficiaries 1 • Girls and boys: Knowledge of basic elements of reproductive health empowers them to make informed decisions • Parents: capacitating youth on basic reproductive health matters relieves parents of the burden of explaining everything to them; especially as this subject is commonly taboo in many communities in Lesotho • Leaders: empowerment in basic leadership and related skills enhances capacity to better serve in their capacity
E. Project Beneficiaries 2 • Communities: youth competent in relevant reproductive health issues, and leaders competent in leadership skills, are essential resources to an empowered community • Motete LECSA Parish: revival of communities in its catchment increases opportunities for competency in church work. • Facilitators: • Gaining of knowledge of the nature of a hard-to-reach parish • Experience on its mission challenges and opportunities • Development of insights for future mission-work in similar contexts.
