  1. 17th North America-Europe Data Exchange Meeting 28-28 May 2004, Montreal Deutscher Wetterdienst status report Reinhold Hess Montreal 2004

  2. Deutscher Wetterdienst status report • Overview: • Main Events in NWP since the last report • Pseudo Temps • Data Usage • 1D-Var for ATOVS • Modis Polar Winds • SATOBS with QI • AIRS • Related Research at DWD • Résumé ReinholdHess, 2 Montreal 2004

  3. Main Events in NWP since the last report Model System: GME (Global Model): hydrostatic, icosahedral-hexagonal grid, mesh size ~60km terrain following hyb. coordinate, 31 layers forecast range: 174h initial dates 00, 12 UTC and 48h for 18 UTC new: prognostic cloud ice, prognostic sea ice Analysis: OI, 3-hourly intermittent analysis, observation window +/- 1.5h observations: conv., AIREP, AMDAR, ACARS, SATEM (NOAA 15, 16), SATOBS (GOES E and W, GMS, Meteosat 5 and 7), PAOB new: MODIS-Winds, PSEUDO-temps cutoff: 2h30 (for forecasts) ReinholdHess, 3 Montreal 2004

  4. Main Events in NWP since the last report Model System: LM (Local Model): non-hydrostatic, rotated latitude-longitude grid, mesh size 7km terrain following hyb. coordinate, 35 layers forecast range: 48 for initial dates 00, 12, 18 UTC new: prognostic cloud ice, prognostic rain Analysis: continuous nudging observations: conv., AIREP,AMDAR,ACARS cutoff: 2h30 variational soil moisture analysis ReinholdHess, 4 Montreal 2004

  5. Assimilation of IFS Pseudo Temps (operational since Dec 17 2003) Use Profiles of IFS/4D-Var Analyses as Temps for OI/GME Assimilation one time per day for 0 UTC into Main Analysis only Data Coverage ReinholdHess, 5 Montreal 2004

  6. Data Usage (ATOVS) Assimilation of 1D-Var Profiles in OI Status: Trial Experiments • Level 1c ATOVS from UKMO (NOAA 15, 16 and 17) • Channel Choice: AMSU-A 5-14 (HIRS deferred) • Bias-Correction: UKMO-Style (scan angle and mass, A4 and A9) • MW Rain/Ice-detection (Kelly and Bauer/ECMWF) • Assimilation as SATEMS in OI (geopotential thicknesses, PWC) ReinholdHess, 6 Montreal 2004

  7. Data Usage (ATOVS) Monitoring: • Time Series of observed and • simulated brightness • temperatures • Selection: • variable (also differences) • satellite • area • channel Routine Monitoring Auto-Alarm (email) ReinholdHess, 7 Montreal 2004

  8. Data Usage: ATOVS Trial Experiment 20040222-20040307 red: Routine with (Pseudo T.), green: Routine (without Pseudo T.) , blue: 1D-Var 0 UTC 12 UTC ANOC GEOP 500 hPa ReinholdHess, 8 Montreal 2004

  9. Data Usage: Modis Polar Winds • operational use of Modis Polar Winds (CIMMS Product) • usage only for assimilation run due to timeliness • comparison of NOAA/NESDIS and CIMMS Product under way 0 UTC 12 UTC ANOC GEOP 500 hPa ReinholdHess, 9 Montreal 2004

  10. Data Usage: SATOBS in BUFR with QI • comparison with conventional SATOBS • evaluation of QI as ECMWF • slight improvement for southern hemisphere • neutral for northern hemisphere • thinning from 60 to 200 km neutral • interest in pre-thinned data product ReinholdHess, 10 Montreal 2004

  11. Data Usage: AIRS Status: • Work has started to assimilate advanced infra-red sounders • Data Reception/Storage of AIRS-Data (thinned, 324 channels) • Monitoring (Global Coverage, “Tartan-Plots”) Plan: • Assimilate directly or as profile-product in 3D-Var in 2006 ReinholdHess, 11 Montreal 2004

  12. Related Research at DWD Development of PSAS (3D-VAR) (physical space assimilation system, dual space, observation space) Minimisation in Observation Space rather than Model Space • Conventional 3D-VAR (MSAS, Model Space Assimilation System) • solve: • PSAS (OSAS, Observation Space Assimilation System) • solve: • more flexibility in definition of B • observation space smaller than model space !?! • minimisation costs become quadratic in number of observations ReinholdHess, 12 Montreal 2004

  13. Assimilation of AIRS (IASI) Work Plan: • 12/2004 Technical Environment 1D-Var (Monitoring, Data Selection) • 12/2005 Experiments, Tuning, Cloud Detection, etc. • 12/2006 Assimilation with 1D-Var (OSAS/3D-Var) • (Interest in Products!!!) Related research at DWD: • Adaptive vertical Error Correlations for 1D-Var • Flexible Error Correlations for OSAS/3D-Var • Ensemble Kalman Filter ReinholdHess, 13 Montreal 2004

  14. Related Research at DWD Adaptive Vertical Error Correlations for 1D-Var (depending e.g. on vorticity) ReinholdHess, 14 Montreal 2004

  15. Status and Plans Résumé: • Operational Use of SATEMS, SATOBS, Modis-Winds (CIMMS) • Pre-Operational: ATOVS with 1D-Var and OI (substituting SATEMS) • Operational Interests in • BUFR-SATOBS • Modis-Winds (NOAA/NESID) • Quickscat Scatterometer • AIRS • Prototype of OSAS/3D-Var (direct Assimilation of ATOVS, AIRS) • but also Interest in AIRS/IASI-Retrievals ReinholdHess, 15 Montreal 2004

  16. Deutscher Wetterdienst status report Many thanks for your attention! ReinholdHess, 16 Montreal 2004
