European University Association (EUA) • EUA: main representative organisation of universities (c730) and their national Rectors’ Conferences (34) in 45 countries across Europe • Mission: to promote coherence in European higher education and research through: • Policy development • Support to members (projects & services) • Particular focus on Bologna implementation • New Bologna country universities not well represented, eg Georgia 7, Moldova 3, Ukraine 17, and no Rectors Conferences -> shared challenge for EUA, for the countries, & for the Bologna process

EUA role in Bologna Process • Policy positions for the European higher education sector • Salamanca, Graz and Glasgow Declarations • Participation in Bologna decision making • EUA is a member in the BFUG, & in all working groups • EUA represents European HEIs in the biannual Ministerial meetings • Support to members in implementing reforms • Conferences, seminars and workshops • Programmes & projects focusing on sharing good practice.. • Trends reports Stocktaking progress towards the EHEA

Trends V • Objectives: • To guage how the Bologna process is developing across Europe; • To stimulate institutional and national discussion of key challenges in implementation; • To identify particular issues that require attention; • To provide reliable information to institutions, Ministries, general public • Methodology: Two main stages: • Survey by questionnaire of European higher education institutions (currently being undertaken) • Institutional site visits (from April – December 2006) • Report to be presented first at 2007 EUA Convention, and then at London Conference

  5. Key actions required for Trends in new Bologna countries • Priority for EUA to gather information from all Bologna countries. Help needed because: • Lack of good national contacts to encourage institutions to respond to the survey questionnaire; • No support yet identified beyond core EUA funds for costs of institutional site visits • Raise awareness of the Trends project; opportunity for higher education institutions to participate actively and express their views (positive or negative) • Assist in identifying institutions willing to organise site visit and host Trends research team;

Bologna Promoters • New project, in response to European Commission call for tender 2005; • Developed with EURASHE, ESIB, EAIE, Tuning Project – to ensure that all main representative higher education actors are involved; • Objective is to ensure European training and exchange of ideas and information for national Bologna promoters • Critical element for EUA is that all activities are open to Bologna promoters in every country • Challenge in the new BP countries is to catch up in the process of identifying individuals capable and willing to be Bologna promoters, and developing their role in institutional & national context

Key actions for Bologna Promoters: • Consider the competences/profiles required for Bologna Promoters; • Establish a legitimate process that ensures a team of promoters with complementary profiles, expertise and experience – in quality assurance, recognition etc • Promoters to come not only from ministries & agencies, but from different types of institutions, and including students – key partners in higher education and the Bologna process • Make project applications through Tempus-Tacis to ensure that Bologna promoters are able to participate in the European events and activities • Start tomorrow, as the first meetings have begun and the next one is planned in June.
