Good Afternoon! • Have books and journals ready and open to Act. 61! • Make sure you turned in your journal so I can grade. Act. 54-59 • Discussion of GRADES!
Agenda • Grades • Project • Objective • Purpose of Lesson • Activity 61 set up journal • Intro Act. 61 • Act. 61 • Exit Slip/Homework
Purpose of Lesson • Students will be able to apply their prior knowledge about conduction of thermal energy and how to carry out scientific investigations to a new situation.
Activity 61: Mixing Hot and Cool Water • Date: 5/12/14 • Challenge Question: • Getting Started: Give an example of conduction. • Give an example of each heat and temperature.
Conduction This can occur with any two materials whether they are solid, liquid, gas, or any combination.
Objective • Students will be able to measure the change of thermal energy when hot and cold water is mixed.
Thermometer Who remembers how to read a thermometer?
Introduction pg. D-43 • Challenge Question: What happens to the energy when hot and cool water are mixed? • We will be conducting an experiment where you will mix liquids of different temperatures, similar to the scenario.
Materials pg. D-44 • Procedure: • Read Step #1 • Prediction: What will happen if you mix each of the following: • Experiment 1: • Experiment 2: • Experiment 3:
Procedure • Step #2 • Prediction: What will happen to the energy and the temperature for each experiment. • Experiment 1: • Experiment 2: • Experiment 3:
Getters: Get your bin and set up your materials
Procedure • Step #4 • Wait for me to call each group up to get hot water. • Complete step #5- record starting temp of both waters- (hot and cold) • Complete step #6- Add cool water to the hot water, stir with a spoon until the temp. remains steady. • Record final temp in your data table
Complete Step #8 • Empty cups and repeat Steps #4- 7 with Experiment 2 volumes • Then complete Experiment #3 volumes • Remember record your data in your data table.
Calculate Temperature Change Subtract final temperature from Initialtemperature.
Homework Exit Slip • Analysis #1-6 pg. D-46 • Extra Credit: Due Monday, May 19, 2014 Complete the extension question pg. D-46 Complete on loose leaf paper • Answer Challenge Question-Act. 61 • write complete sentences and give evidence
