  3. Most social workers are employed by private agencies, both not-for-profit and for-profit, including self-employment in their own private practice offices. Professional social workers provide half the nation’s mental health and therapy services -- more than psychiatrists, psychologists, and other related professionals COMBINED!!! A social worker is a trained professional who has a bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degree in social work – not simply someone who works in a helping role. Facts About Social Workers…

  5. Roles of a Social Worker

  6. So, what do they DO? • Assessment of clients’ problems, strengths, family situation, needs, goals • Problem-solving related to concrete needs and environmental conditions • Counseling to provide emotional support -- or psychotherapy for cognitive/affective/behavioral problems

  7. So, what do they DO? • Advocacy – helping clients get the services and resources that they need when the system isn’t responsive to them • Networking – identifying agencies and programs that provide services that clients need – and connecting the client with the services

  8. So, what do they DO? • Evaluation – single-subject case designs, program evaluation, etc. – to determine if the interventions are accomplishing the desired goals • Social policy – analyzing and influencing social policy development that benefits people and communities

  11. Salaries Average beginning salaries vary according to experience, field of practice, and geographic location: • BSW From $20,000 to $30,000 • MSW From $25,000 to $45,000 • DSW/ Ph.D. From $50,000 to $80,000

INTERESTED IN OUR MSW PROGRAM? • Minimum Admissions Criteria: • GPA of 3.0 OR GRE Score of 1000+ • Application includes a personal statement, transcript, resume, and letters of recommendation • Volunteer or paid experience in human services is highly desirable • Students with a B.S. degree may in the traditional two-year MSW Program – entry date every Fall Semester • Students with a BSW degree enroll in the one-year MSW Program – entry date every Fall, Spring, or Summer Semester • Both part-time and full-time MSW programs are available
