AISD’s Strategic Plan and BYOT In our effort to be a high-performing, technology-rich school district that offers leading-edge learning experiences for students, Arlington ISD will combine technical solutions that comply with CIPA and responsible-use guidelines that protect students as we implement a BYOT model.

  3. Advantages of BYOT • Supports the goals of AISD’s Strategic Plan • Creates more engaging classroom activities • Increases hands-on access to technology devices • Requires less time to teach “how-to”

  5. Leveraging BYOT: Students can Consume Information • Research- find the answer to.... • Read documents on own device • Read books • Access tutorials • Access online textbooks

Leveraging BYOT: Students can Interact with the Curriculum • Whiteboard to practice working out problems • Create and review notecards for classes • Take notes by writing or typing • Photograph and label diagrams, graphs, slides, or other visuals to refer to later • Scan QR codes to gather information, navigate to specific web resources, check their own work, or participate in other QR code activities designed by the teacher

Leveraging BYOT: Students can Interact with the Curriculum (ctd.) • Use their devices as a remote response system- “clickers” • Annotate documents (scribble & markup on handouts) • Fill out Google forms or online quizzes for immediate feedback • Answer teacher polls to check for understanding, interests, etc. • Learn from each other by making and reading posts in a safe and protected social learning network

Leveraging BYOT: Students can Organize Themselves • “Scan” in paper handouts to store and retrieve, never to be “lost” again • Check their own grades (using TEAMS Student Self Serve) • Keep a calendar of assignments, to-do lists, meetings, etc. • Access their files stored in the cloud Record lectures/notes • Create voice memos

  9. Leveraging BYOT: Students can Create Original Works • Create Mind Maps to organize concepts & information • Create slideshows and presentations • Puppet shows, comics, narrated photos, etc. • Maintain a student portfolio or blog

  10. BYOT Guidelines • Educational purposes & permission must be granted from teacher • Includes a variety of devices (laptops, tablets, smartphones, and more) • Record serial numbers at home, label devices & peripherals

  13. BYOT Guidelines • Must use AISD wireless network while on campus- AISD not responsible for charges on other connections • Posts & comments must be relevant & have educational purposes

  14. BYOT Guidelines • Must obtain teacher permission (for every instance) before recording, taking pictures, and publishing images, information, and work of others • Devices must be silent unless teacher permission is given otherwise • No student is required to bring a device

  15. BYOT Guidelines • District & employees are not responsible for lost, damaged, or stolen items • Staff is not responsible for troubleshooting devices

  16. BYOT Guidelines • Devices may be confiscated for inappropriate or disruptive use • Devices will be confiscated when used to bully, threaten, or endanger- held for disciplinary action, & provided to law enforcement if necessary

  17. BYOT Guidelines • Unclaimed devices at end of school year will be disposed of or recycled • Personal (non-educational) use of devices is determined by administrators at each individual school. At Martin High School, students will be allowed to use their devices before/after school and at lunch.

  18. BYOT Scenario #1 In the middle of science class, Josh pulls out his smartphone and takes a picture of the diagram that is projected on the front screen. His teacher tells him to put it away immediately. Josh replies “I’m allowed to use it! We can use our devices in class now!” Which guideline is Josh ignoring?

  22. BYOT Technical Specifications • Current AISD-Guest network will go away • Students will connect to a new network: AISDnet • This network will broadcast (appear automatically on devices as an available network) • This network has no password

  23. BYOT Technical Specifications • Connection to AISDnet will NOT allow students to access their home folders or any other folder on the AISD network • Does not allow access to AISD printers • Does not require users to visit the splash page on a browser and accept the Terms of Use

BYOT Technical Specifications • AISD-owned devices will continue to connect to the wpa-aisd network • Internet speed (bandwidth) for district-owned devices takes priority over devices on AISDnet- therefore, the number of BYOT devices on the network will not adversely affect the access to the network from district-owned devices
