1969: The ARPANET – First version of Internet by American Defence Agency • Only four small groups of computers networked for the first time • Why? To protect America from nuclear threats
1972: First email sent. Ray Tomlinson wrote the email program. • @ symbol introduced for the first time • 1978: The first SPAM email message was sent to 320 people on the ARPANET network.

1994 Yahoo kicks off the first internet email website • 1995 Amazon.com and eBay become first online shops • 1996: Internet Explorer and Netscape compete to be top internet browser
1998: • Charlie Oliver is born • And so is Google
2001 Wikipedia is introduced • 2004 Broadband becomes more used than dial up • More than 1 million searches on Google each day • 2008: 71% of businesses say they can’t survive one day without the internet
Today: • There are over 100 million websites • 75% are businesses • One out of five people access the internet
Connecting through wireless will make the internet even faster • New kinds of computers and programs will make people even more connected through the internet
