Literature Integration • The Pledge of Alleguance by Francis Bellamy • -This book is simply the Pledge of Allegiance, but the significance • of each phrase is explained through pictures • The Flag We Love by Pam Ryan • This book describes the history of the flag and the meaning of • each of its colors and symbols. • Red, White, and Blue by John Herman • This book introduces various patriotic symbols outside of the • flag to students on a basic level • America the Beautiful by Katherine Bates • This book illustrates the patriotic song and introduces the • meaning of the freedom we have as Americans.

Collaborative Learning • Students will each create one page of a class book by writing or illustrating a location where they see the American Flag called I See the Flag! • Each student will contribute to a handprint flag that will be displayed in the classroom Learner Participation • Presentation • After studying symbols, students will create a “family flag” out of colors and symbols that represents them and present it to the class • Each day a different group of 3-4 students will lead the Pledge and a patriotic song

  4. Assessment • Each group of students will be assigned either honesty, courage, or patriotism. Each group will research their topic, and use information from group discussion and present to the class what their term means to them in any form that they choose. • Each group will model fluency and confidence in reciting the Pledge • Each group will perform their choice of a patriotic song presented in class or of their choice. 21st Century Learning • Group Work • Collaborative Projects • Individual and Group • Presentations
