Overview • HEI and Regents Reports – Detailed information on Ohio postsecondary outcomes, mostly public • NCHEMS Higher Education Information – High level education, demographic, and economic data at national, state, and county level • IPEDS – Detailed, wide-ranging federal Department of Education surveys of all postsecondary institutions in U.S. • Analysis of some critical indicators – Graduation rates and tuition

3. Higher Education Information (HEI) System • Standardized unit-record data files from all 37 public institutions • Student demographics and enrollment, course, degrees, faculty and personnel, tuition and financial aid, course-level expenditures, facilities data • “Unit-record” means “highest level of detail.” Individual students, individual courses, individual instructors – all connected by ID numbers • Started in 1998. One of the largest and most comprehensive higher education databases in U.S.

8. High School to College Transition Reports • Annual report on how the most recent graduating class from Ohio’s high schools made the transition from high school to college. Community College Portraits • Two-page portraits containing enrollment, student characteristics, success rate, tuition and financial aid, degrees awarded, class size, instructor characteristics, and employment data. • Designed to be Ohio’s community college counterpart to the national “Voluntary System of Accountability” reporting that the universities do.

NCHEMS Higher Education Information • www.nchems.org • “Provides state policymakers and analysts timely and accurate data and information that are useful in making sound higher education policy decisions. The Information Center is a comprehensive "one-stop-shop" for state-level higher education data and information, and a leader in coordinating the collection of missing data and information that are crucial for higher education policy analysis.“ • Point and click, easy to use interface. Data are available in tables, graphs, and maps. Cool.

IPEDS - Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System • www.nces.ed.gov/ipeds/ • System of interrelated surveys conducted annually by the U.S. Department of Education’s National Center for Education Statistics (NCES). • Universe -- every college, university, and technical and vocational institution that participates in the federal student financial aid programs. • Survey areas - enrollments, program completions, graduation rates, faculty and staff, finances, institutional prices, and student financial aid.

Student Success Rates – Challenges in Measurement and Interpretation • IPEDS Graduation Rate Survey – Most common source for graduation rate data • IPEDS definition of graduation rate for four-year institutions • Denominator = First-time, Full-time, Degree-seeking freshmen who begin in fall term • Numerator = Students who earn bachelor’s degree from “initial” institution • Timeframe = Six years

21. Issues with IPEDS Graduation Rate • Many students are not in the tracking cohort; their success is not measured • Part-time, spring term starts, transfers-in are out of the picture • Outcomes tracking is incomplete – if you leave one school and graduate from another, you are not counted as a graduate • What is special about six years?

22. An Expanded View of Graduation Rates • Ohio public universities “IPEDS” rate = 56% • Transfers out who graduate from another Ohio public university = 3% • Associate degree earners = 2% • Still enrolled at Ohio public institution in 6th year = 12% • Total measured graduation or persistence = 73% • Unmeasured success = any graduation or persistence at private or out-of-state colleges • True success rate might be well over 75%

What Does it Cost to Attend College? • Various answers • Tuition • It depends • Don’t know • Too much • How much you got? • New data is giving us better answers • Student-level data on tuition, all instructional fees, and financial aid • Full price has multiple components, not just tuition • Subtract grant aid to get Net Price • We have a pattern of Net Prices, not a single tuition rate
