  4. A 2007 BUREAU of LABOR STATISTICS REPORT STATES.… On the average, the yearly earnings of • a person with a Ph.D. is $73,100 • a person with a master’s degree is $56,300 • a person with a bachelor’s degree is $48,300 • a person with an associate degree is $35,000

  8. IT WOULD DIFFICULT TO ARGUE WITH THE VALUE OF EDUCATION YET… For every 100 high school students in the United States: • Only 67 will finish high school in 4 years • Only 38 will go to college • Only 18 will earn associate degrees in 3 years or bachelor’s degrees in 6 years

SOME COMMON COLLEGE PLANNING VOCABULARY PLAN TEST: Pre-ACT college readiness test (10th grade) • Administered by Mrs. Sherman on October 15, 2009 • Sign up in Counseling Office • $15.00 (fee waiver available) • Career planning component ACT TEST: College readiness/admittance test measuring aptitude (knowledge) in 4 particular areas: English, math, reading & science • Optional writing test available • Maximum ACT is 36 • $32.00 (fee waiver available) • Both ACT and SAT accepted by Universities nation wide

  12. PSAT TEST: Pre-SAT college readiness test (10th &/0r 11th) • Administered by Mrs. Sherman on October 14, 2009 • Very high 11th grade results qualify for the National Merit Scholarship. Strong students often take it 10th & 11th grade • Sign up in the Counseling Office • $15.00 (fee waiver available) SAT TEST: A college readiness/admittance test measuring critical reading & mathematical reasoning • Includes writing test • The maximum SAT is 1600 (critical reading + math) • $45 (fee waiver available) • Both SAT & ACT accepted at Universities nation wide • SAT II Subject tests are required by some selective Universities Students interested in attending any Military Academy or ROTC are advised to take the PSAT 10th & 11th grade!

SOME THINGS TO THINK ABOUT REGARDING ACT/SAT ACT TEST: a criterion-referenced test measuring aptitude or learned material & compares the tester to the test • ACT scoring= +1 if correct, 0 if incorrect • No penalty for guessing • AIMS is an example of a criterion-referenced test SAT TEST: a norm referenced test measuring general critical reasoning & compares the testers to peers • SAT scoring= +1 if correct, -1/4 if incorrect multiple choice answer & 0 if incorrect student produced answer • Might not want to guess • Stanford 9 & Terra Nova’s are norm-referenced tests

EXTREMELY SELECTIVE- Yale, Stanford, Harvard, MIT, Military Academies, Princeton, et.al. • HIGHLY SELECTIVE- NYU, Tulane, Reed, et.al. • SELECTIVE- UC Irvine, UC San Diego, Cal State, et.al. • SOMEWHAT SELECTIVE- State universities, private & religious, et.al. • NOT SELECTIVE (Open enrollment)- Many small state colleges, community colleges, et. Al.

COLLEGE APPLICATION INFO UNIVERSITIES • University deadlines & requirements vary – be careful • October 1stis suggested for state universities • Admissions starts the institution scholarship process • Usually requires ACT/SAT. Have results sent directly there • Rolling Admissions: you will get a decision as soon as application is processed • Regular Admissions : you will get a decision on or about April 1st

Early Decision: Very academically strong students completely committed to a specific (usually selective) school apply to that school early in the Fall and sign a contract that if admitted they will attend COMMUNITY COLLEGES • Apply anytime, usually the Spring • Admissions starts the institution scholarship process • Does not require an ACT/SAT • Offers certificate, degree & transfer programs

COLLEGE DEGREE LEVELS • A.A./A.S- Associate of Arts or Science- 2 year degree • A.A.S.- Associate of Applied Science- 2 year degree usually direct to work • B.A./B.S.- Bachelor of Arts or Science- 4 year degree • M.A./M.S.- Master of Arts or Science- Requires 1-3 years additional study after receiving Bachelor’s • Ed. D or Ph.D- Doctoral Degrees. 3-4 years of study beyond Master’s Degree

  19. COLLEGE PLANNING TIMELINE ON GOING: Read! Take challenging classes & get good grades, participate in extracurricular activities, consider doing community service, research colleges & careers, and maintain your portfolio. FRESHMAN: Read! Form a 4-year high school plan, start a college/career planning portfolio, begin to study for the PLAN/PSAT and attend college fairs & information nights. SOPHOMORE: Read! Take the PLAN and/or the PSAT test in October, start preparing for ACT/SAT, seek help if grades are dropping and visit colleges if possible.

  20. JUNIOR FALL: Read! Take advanced courses, take the PSAT in October, the ASVAB in December, retest AIMS to Exceed, and continue studying for the ACT/SAT. JUNIOR SPRING: Read! Take the ACT/SAT and consider attending college or a career summer academy JUNIOR SUMMER: Read! Make your college list, gather college applications, organize for scholarships & study for the ACT/SAT if you need to retest. Military Academy or ROTC bound kids should really attempt to attend the summer academy! Military Academy or ROTC bound kids are advised to take the ACT/SAT in the fall so you can study & retest if necessary!

  21. SENIOR FALL: Take a deep breath & get busy! Read! Continue to take advanced courses including math, retake the ACT/SAT if necessary, work on College applications and continue scholarship submissions SENIOR JANUARY: Read! I know you want to relax but don’t destroy your GPA or scholarship opportunities- keep working!! Attend the FAFSA presentation January 25, 2010 & submit FAFSA as soon as possible, keep working on scholarships and keep Mrs. Sherman informed of your progress SENIOR SPRING: Make decision, pay deposits, register for orientation and keep working on scholarships and keep Mrs. Sherman informed of your progress
