About SFO’s Office of Employment and Community Partnerships (ECP) In addition to managing multiple unique internship programs, ECP coordinates school partnerships, employment-related tours, and the Susanna Tong Employment information Center, a one-stop employment center. ECP also oversees the Airport’s compliance with San Francisco First Source, and works closely with the SFO Employment Quality Standards Program that oversees compliance of contractors at SFO.
ECP Internship Programs The Airport commits itself to serving the needs of youth employment through internships and developing established relationships with youth organizations. Our current internship programs are: FB
High School Interns Tech 21 Partnership The purpose of this program is to expose youth to the workplace outside of their formal educational experience to develop the soft skills necessary to maintain employment, learn the variety of job and career opportunities at the Airport and begin to develop personal financial responsibility. Fall recruitment is limited to YouthWorks. Applications are due 9/12. Summer recruitment starts in January.
College Interns All of our College Internships provide students currently attending college an opportunity to gain career experience, exposure to career options and to strongly consider future employment with the airport. The Management Intern Program provides recent post graduates comprehensive exposure to airport operations, planning and finance in preparation for a career in airport management, business, finance, or planning in public government and transportation entities. SFO Project Assist Engineering Trainee Program S.F. College Interns Program Summer recruitment for most programs will start in November 2013.
Why SFO Career Connect? In 2004 the S.F. Board of Supervisors required that four city departments create an at-risk youth employment program. The Airport was one of the four departments. Instead of creating a temporary program that only solves unemployment and economic issues for the short-term, ECP created… A temporary Airport Commission internship that is designed to lead to permanent employment, ideally with an SFO Tenant. All interns who graduate with employer referral have transitioned to employment, primarily at SFO. Making it to graduation is our main goal for Career Connect interns, and nine out of ten typically do. Out of the nine, six typically receive employer referral. “SFO’s job training programs are the gold standard for the City.” Brad BensonSpecial Projects Manager, Port of San Francisco FB
What is SFO Career Connect? This program provides valuable skills and resources that will enable at-risk youth, ages 18 – 25, to be prepared and more marketable for employment. The program offers training in a variety of workshops covering tips to stay successful at work including career and school planning, finance, time-management, and nutrition. Case management is extensive to assure interns have housing and the necessary stability to make it to work on a daily basis. Upon completion of the program, the youth should be ready to maintain regular employment while managing personal situations like establishing housing and young parenthood. LM
Employment Track The objective is to provide youths, 18 – 25, with a structured work environment so they can learn good work skills and receive exposure to a variety of career options. Employment Track Interns work with Commission Office 35 hours per week, for a duration of 6 - 7 months. During the internship, we provide extensive training on career development and long-term planning. This includes information on apprenticeship, college, and diverse training programs. College Track has all the same objectives of Employment Track, but limits interns work schedule to 15 hours per week. College Track Interns work for nine months with a Commission office.
