Teen Development Behind the Process of Adolescence
What happens during teen development? As teenagers mature, they undergo physical, mental and emotional changes to transition into an adult. Although everyone matures differently, the overall process is pretty much the same. There are three stages of maturing. There is Preadolescence, Adolescence, and Adulthood.
Preadolescence Preadolescence is where the overall maturing process begins. This starts between the ages of 10-13 but girls may show signs of maturing by the age of 7. This is where the first major physical changes take place.
Adolescence Adolescence is the second stage of maturing. From the ages of 13-17 is when this transpires. Mental and emotional characteristics are further developed in this period. In the brain, the prefrontal cortex progresses the most during these ages.
Adulthood Adulthood is the final stage of maturing. The typical ages for adulthood are 17-20. Cognitive skills that have been improving since preadolescence are finalized in the course adulthood. Every aspect of maturation is being readied for the transition in becoming an adult.
What is the overall purpose of teen development? As adolescents mature, they begin to establish an identity for themselves. Also certain skills develop such as social interaction, setting goals and values, becoming more responsible and mature, and being able to plan for and adapt to the future. Throughout the course of maturation, the focus is for adolescents to prepare for adult life and concentrate on being successful in a career and accomplish aspirations later in life.
