High School - AVID I am a College bound student. What do I need to know?
Basics • All classes must be C’s or better (A’s & B’s) • That means about 2 hours/night of homework M-F • There are certain classes that you must take • For example: World Language (2 years) • You will be taking at least 4 summer school classes • Health and Computers this summer if possible
What is Different in High School? • Many teachers : • Don’t give repeats on tests • Don’t give extra credit • Don’t accept late work • Grades are cumulative (until end of Jan) (teacher’s won’t hound you about your work or grades) • You are expected to go to tutorial to get: • Homework missed • Make-up tests and labs immediately after absence • Get help if you need it (many freshman make the mistake of not going to tutorial)
How many years do I have at RBHS? • 4 • You will take 2 semester classes more than you need to graduate. • What do people do with these classes? • Some repeat 2 D’s (like if you struggled in your first AP class and need to get a C or better) • Some repeat 2 F’s • Some take off roll 6th or 1st period senior year • Most graduate with extra credits (this is good)

What classes, besides electives, do I need for college (and graduation)? * English (4 years) * Math (3-4 years) * Science (2-4 years) * Language (2-4 years) * History/Government (3 years) * Art (1 year) Others: Computers, Health, Practical Art, PE (2years)
SAT and ACT • 10th and 11th – take the PSAT in spring • 10th is practice, 11th is used for scholarships • 11th and 12th - take the SAT/ACT • 11th spring, 12th fall – used to get into college Look up SAT and College info at collegeboard.com
California State University’s 23 Campuses Minimum = 2.0 (most applicants have much higher) San Diego State University 3.6 = avg. gpa (last year - out of service area)
University of California’s 10 Campuses Minimum = 3.0 Right now: You can only get into 2 schools with a 3.0 UCSD- you should be in the 4.0 range
What else do colleges want? • UC’s and Private schools want to see that you are involved! • Clubs • Volunteer Work !! • Sports • Music • Art Keep a log of your activities
Advice from seniors… • Missing work kills your grades! Don’t let yourself slack off. A + F = C A + F = F 100 + 50 = 75 avg (C) 100 + 0 = 50 avg (F)
What classes are usually taken in Summer School? • Computers • Health • PE • PE • World History 1 • World History 2 • US History 1 • US History2 Pick at least 4
What to take this summer? • Computers • Health Write AVID across the top of your Summer School request form.
UC/CSU : 4 summer school: Computers, Health, PE, PE or • Computers, Health, World Hist 1/2 (9-10) or US Hist 1/2 (10-11) SAMPLE SCHEDULE
UC/CSU Minimum: No Summer School Note: In order to remain competitive for the UC system, 4 years of Science and 3 or more years of Language other than English are recommended. This schedule does not provide that option. SAMPLE SCHEDULE
UC/CSU/4yr Selective : 4 summer school: Computers, Health, PE, PE Note: Taking this many Honors and AP classes is not recommended for most students. If you plan on taking them, your best option may be to pick a couple of Honors and/or AP classes. SAMPLE SCHEDULE
