What expenses will I have in college? • Direct costs vs. indirect costs • College can be very expensive, but if you plan and save, it can be affordable!
What are direct costs? • Direct costs include: • Tuition • Fees • On campus room & board
What is tuition? • Tuition is the cost of taking college classes • The cost of attending an out of state school vs. an in state school is a huge difference! • For example, if you are a resident of Florida and attend UF, the tuition is about $4,300 a year...but if you are NOT a resident of Florida, the tuition at UF is about $17,390!!
What fees will there be? • Besides tuition, most colleges charge other fees • Activities fees, athletic facilities fees, and lab fees (for most science classes) • These can be over $500 a year! At some schools, these fees are included in the tuition costs.
What is on-campus room & board? • On-campus room= dorms or resident halls (housing provided by the college/university for a fee) • Board- costs of dining on campus (most colleges, it averages about $5000 a year) • Most colleges offer a meal plan that covers the cost of 3 meals a day (about $2640 a year), or you can do declining balance.
What are indirect costs? • Indirect costs include: • Books & supplies • Computer • Off-campus room & board • Transportation • Personal expenses • Other costs
How much will books & supplies cost? • Books are hugely expensive! • The average yearly costs of books and supplies is over $1000!! • How to save? Buy used or share with a friend. • For example: a biology textbook costs over $190 brand new, the same book would be about $20 if bought used.

Will I Need A Computer? • Most colleges/universities require students to own their own computer or laptop • The average cost of a computer, printer, internet connection, etc. is $1040 • Some colleges/universities provide students with free access to computer labs, but they are often very crowded!
How much is off-campus room & board? • While many colleges/universities offer on-campus living and dining, many students prefer to live off-campus. • Fees to consider for off-campus living include: • Rent • Furniture • Utilities • Food (groceries) • For example: $400/month for rent, $200/month for utilities, $400/month for groceries...can be over $1000/month!
Transportation Costs • Fees to consider for transportation costs: • Parking permits • Gas • Car up-keep • Buses/public transportation
What personal expenses will I have? • Fees to consider for personal expenses: • Cell phones • Shopping • Hair • Laundry • Entertainment
What other costs will I have? • Sports (season tickets) • Greek life (sorority or fraternity...can cost over $2000 a year!) • Traveling • Any others you can think of??
What will it cost? • Including all of these fees, for an in-state four year college or university, it can cost over $16,000 per year!

What are scholarships? • A scholarship is a sum of money awarded to a student to help with the cost of college • Florida Bright Futures • They pay 100% of your tuition plus extra money for books and housing • You must earn a 3.50 gpa, 28 ACT or 1280 SAT, and 100 hrs or more of community service • Renewing vs. non-renewing • Renewing scholarships mean you get the money every year of college • Non-renewing scholarships mean you only get it upon first entering college
How can grants help? • A grant is money awarded to students that doesn’t have to be paid back. • The most common grant is called the Pell Grant • Students are eligible for more grant money depending on their parents’ income and the size of their family • Everyone should apply for financial aid, regardless of income...you never know what you might get!
What are loans? • A loan is money given to a student that must be paid back eventually • There are two types: • Federal loans (through the government) • Private loans (through banks or other organizations)
What is work study? • Work study is a program where eligible students work for the college/university to pay for tuition (they sometimes will also receive a wage/salary)
What about the military? • Military First, College later: students can receive up to $50,000 toward college • College First, Military later: ROTC- gives you money for tuition and expenses, then after graduation you are required to serve at least three years in the military.
