What is AVID? • AVID - Advancement via Individual Determination • Designed by a San Diego teacher, Mary Catherine Swanson, to help the students “in the academic middle” get accepted into four year Universities and obtain the skills necessary to succeed college. • AVID is an elective class that is part of a complete college preparatory program.
What to expect: • To learn and practice the tools that will make you a successful student (Note taking, organization, higher level thinking, studying) • To build a community/family atmosphere • To be accountable to staying current with class assignments • To volunteer at school or in your community • To visit College Campuses (PLNU, UCLA, SDSU) • Encouragement to attend College after High School
A Sample Week in AVID • Monday - AVID Curriculum • Tuesday – AVID Curriculum • Wednesday - Binder and Cornell Note Checks • Thursday – Tutorials with college tutors • Friday – Team building activites
AVID Curriculum • WICR • Writing • Inquiry • Collaboration • Reading • College and career information is disseminated, as are strategies for success such as Cornell note taking
The AVID Student • Have average to high standardized test scores • 2.0-3.5 GPA • Have the potential to go to college with some support • Show individual desire and DETERMINATION to be successful
The AVID Student • We also look at the following criteria: • First in their family to attend college • Historically underrepresented in 4-year colleges • Lower socioeconomic status • Special circumstances
