  2. photons radio CFC’s Low frequency Protects us from harmful UV microwave ozone infrared Electromagnetic spectrum Trapped radiation visible reflected radiation ultraviolet Water vapour Ionising radiation Damages cells Carbon dioxide X-ray high frequency gamma methane Greenhouse effect Time exposure Intensity (strength) Carbon cycle respiration respiration CO2 photosynthesis Benefit / Risk Hydrocarbons fossil fuels decompose ALARA principal Precautionary principal

  3. Radiation from the sun Photons CFC’s found in fridges and aerosols deplete the ozone layer . Ozone protects all living things from harmful UV. Electromagnetic spectrum Radio Microwave Infrared Visible Ultraviolet X-ray gamma Low frequency / energy Ozone (O3) absorbs UV Global warming: Too much gases in the atmosphere absorb and trap (green house effect) the radiation. high frequency / energy Major greenhouse gases include: Carbon dioxide, methane and water Ionising radiation To balance benefit / risk consider: exposure time, intensity and a shield that will absorb radiation i.e. lead, sunblock, etc. High doses kill cells. Smaller doses damage cells. Damaging the DNA can result in cancers. • The carbon cycle is a balanced system. • Photosynthesis (removes) • Respiration (releases) • Burning fossil fuels (releases) • Death / excretion (releases) Precautionary principal (better safe than sorry!) ALARA principal As Low As Reasonably Acceptable Imbalance of the cycle can cause climate change: burning / deforestation
