Physiology: Study of the function of the body. How everything works. Systems
Levels of Organization • Life can be broken down into physical and chemical levels. We will discuss seven different levels.
ATOMS • ATOMS • Atoms are considered part of the chemical level. (e.g. C, H, O, N)
MOLECULES • MOLECULES • One or more atoms. Also known as the chemical level. (e.g. H20 CO2)
CELL • CELL • The smallest living unit in the human body (e.g. cyto-, -cyte)
TISSUE • TISSUE • A collection of cells that perform a specific function. • (e.g. muscle)
ORGAN • ORGAN • Combination of tissues that perform complex functions. (e.g. heart, liver)
SYSTEMS • SYSTEM • A group of organs that work together to perform one or more functions. (e.g. Nervous system, digestive)
ORGANISM • ORGANISM • Human being. All systems work together. • (e.g. ME!)
Review • Atom Molecule • Cell Tissue • Organ System • Organism
Don’t forget • This flowchart can go both ways so add arrows going backwards.
Systems (WORK TIME) • Let us learn about systems of the body. Complete page 4 in you lab books. (Text pages 7-13)
