Rural Counterattack Chapter 25 Transition to Modern America 1920-1928
The “Red Scare” • The rise of communism in Europe worried many Americans and became the lightning rod for any kind of radicalism. • Attorney General A. Mitchell Palmer’s house was bombed, leading to a crackdown on radicals and foreigners. • The Justice Department deported and arrested immigrants without any trials. • Palmer warned of a revolution on Mary 1, 1920, and, when it didn’t happen, most Americans lost interest in the hysteria.
Prohibition • The 18th Amendment and the Volstead Act ended the legality of alcohol sales. • Partially an attack on immigrants from Ireland and southern Europe where drinking was part of their culture. • Prohibition did lead to a decline in drinking. • Organized crime provided illegal alcohol. • Proved ineffective to combat the problems of American society, like poverty, and inadvertently increased the power of organized crime
Ku Klux Klan • Protested for the “native born, white, gentile Americans” • Gained political control in many states, including Texas • Gave security to insecure white men who couldn’t deal with the changes of American society • Died out quickly because of violence
Immigration Restriction • Nativists believed that immigrants were inferior to white Americans and would destroy the country. • Immigrants from southern and eastern Europe following the end of World War I. • 1921 emergency immigration act set quotas. • National Origins Quota Act (1921) limited immigration, gave special treatment to western Europeans, and banned Asians.
Scopes Monkey Trial • John Scopes stood trial for teaching evolution. • William Jennings Bryan led the prosecution, and Clarence Darrow led the defense. • Scopes was found guilty and given a small fine. • The trial illustrated the strength of rural religious fundamentalism (strict beliefs).
