  4. Chaperone Responsibilities 1 • Chaperones will play an important role during Wiley’s 5th grade tour of Williamsburg. The nature of the position means that the student’s relationship with their chaperone is an integral element attributing to the enjoyment of their tour experience. Each chaperone will be assigned a group of between 4 and 6 students for the duration of the tour. All chaperones are expected to attend the orientation session held in the weeks prior to the tour departing. • The chaperone will be able to strike the balance between providing a fun and enjoyable environment for the students and control of discipline. • All chaperones must have registered as a volunteer with WCPSS and has passed the background check.

Chaperone Responsibilities 2 Chaperone positions are available to any adult who is willing and able to complete the following duties during the tour: Duties: • Check your students onto buses at each departure point • Supervise the behavior of students at all times • Bed check duty • Wake up call duty • Attend to most immediate needs and/or concerns of students • Serve as a liaison between the student and 5th grade teachers • Assist staff with any logistical needs such as: o --loading and unloading equipment off of buses o --run errands as needed

  6. $$$ Cost $$$ • Deposit: $100 DUE December 18th • Balance $125 DUE March 15th • Total Cost of trip per student/chaperone-- $225 each • We are accepting donations to sponsor other students that are eligible to receive a scholarship. 13 are needed • Applied for Target and NC PTA field trip grants • Donations/Grants needed: $3000

Curriculum Connections: • 5.H.1 Analyze the chronology of key events in the United States. • 5.H.1.1 Evaluate the relationships between European explorers (French, Spanish and English) and American Indian groups, based on accuracy of historical information (beliefs, fears and leadership). • 5.H.1.2 Summarize the political, economic and social aspects of colonial life in the thirteen colonies. • 5.H.1.3 Analyze the impact of major conflicts, battles and wars on the development of our nation through Reconstruction. • 5.H.2 Understand the role of prominent figures in shaping the United States. • 5.H.2.1 Summarize the contributions of the “Founding Fathers” to the development of our country. • 5.H.2.2 Explain how key historical figures have exemplified values and principles of American democracy. • 5.H.2.3 Compare the changing roles of women and minorities on American society from Pre-Colonial through Reconstruction.

Safety Plan: Advanced Scouting • Before going on the actual field trip, teachers and other leaders will research the destination and meet with Hollbrook leaders to make sure the destinations are safe and appropriate for the age of children we plan to take. Inquire about hazards such as large bodies of water, chemicals, animals on the loose, stairs and traffic in the area. Permission Slips • All children will have permission slips signed by a parent or guardian. Include all the information about the trip, such as the date, location, address, transportation, departure time and arrival time. We will have emergency contact information on hand with the parent's names and how they can be contacted. The permission slips will be carried by each students’ homeroom teacher in her emergency red bag. Staffing • During the field trip, we will have the proper adult-child ratio from the moment we leave until we arrive back at the school. The adults will be teachers, administrators, parents and other approved adults. Each adult will be assigned a group of children so everyone is accounted for at all times.

Safety Plan Con’t Identification • We will be making lanyards or armbands for each child to wear throughout the field trip that includes their name, school, allergies, medical needs, and emergency information. We will instruct the children to leave the lanyard/armband on from when we leave the school until we return. We are looking into having class T-shirts for all the children to wear. Travel • When we travel in the charter bus, we will follow the travel company’s regulations for safe travel. Adults will maintain a quiet level on the buses at all times to ensure the bus driver is respected and can drive the bus safely.

  10. Safety Plan Con’t Cleanliness and First Aid • We will always have a first aid bag and method of cleaning children's hands when we go on this field trip. The first aid bag will include emergency numbers, disposable gloves, bandages, gauze, tape, disinfectant, plastic bags, paper, pen, and small scissors. Also we will bring disinfectant lotions or gels in case there isn't a place for the children to wash their hands before eating. We will have bottled water on hand for rinsing or drinking as needed. Students with allergies and medical needs will have designated adults to assist them and a plan will be agreed upon by teacher leaders and the school nurse. Buddy System • We will pair the children off with a buddy for an extra degree of accountability. They will be instruct to stay with their buddies throughout the entire trip and to let an adult supervisor know if the buddy wanders off or gets hurt.

Survey Questions • How will room assignments work? --3-5 students per room with chaperone --room assignment survey will be given to the kids so they feel comfortable with who they are rooming with • Are the kids allowed to bring electronic devices for the bus rides? --Yes, small electronics are permitted, but Wiley is not responsible for lost or broken electronics. --Must have headphones -- No iPads or laptops --We will have a DVD player on the bus. • Will the students be supervised at all times? --absolutely, teachers & chaperones will have 5-6 kids with them at all times • Will the cost per person increase if there isn't 100% participation? -- We have enough people for the current rate to remain. • Why hasn’t there been a fundraiser? -- Parents are welcome put together a fundraiser. • Will students receiving scholarships be asked to contribute a small part? --We are asking everyone to contribute however they can.

Survey Questions Con’t • How will the kids be grouped and kept track of? --Chaperones will have 5-6 students and we will take head counts at the beginning and end of each tour. • Will the rooms be same sex? YES • Will the kids be able to sit where they want on the bus? –We will assign seats with student input. It is important that they are happy, comfortable and paired with someone that encourages positive behavior. • What will their academic expectations be before & after trip? --We will preview the locations, importance to history, and have journal assignments during the trip to reflect on what they have learned. After the trip we will connect what we experienced to our social studies curriculum content. • Will they need any extra $$? OPTIONAL: Shopping $
