Incubation 2 to 5 days • Attaches to urethral or vaginal columnar epithelial cells by pili and other surface proteins • Portal of entry is mucous membranes of genitalia • Causes PID ( pelvic inflammatory disease )
Resistance • Used to be cured 100% with Penicillin • Developed a resistance • Plasmid-mediated resistance • Chromosomally resistant
DNA Transfer images found @ www.bois.niu.edu • Transmits with pili • Has adhesins on it’s fimbrae • Only adhere to cells lining urethra & vagina in humans

Special Precautions • Must wear PPG ( gloves, lab coat, safety glasses ) • All contaminated areas cleaned with antibacterial detergent ( must kill gram negative cocci ) • All sex partners must be notified
