Summary • Our Father in heaven • 2-way and not 1-way babbling • “Father” draws God’s attention • We realize we are already accepted as sons and daughters and do not need to prove anything to lay hold of that claim • In heaven, establishes his place in glory and majesty, and his eternalness • ‘Hollowed be your name’ shows our intent to uphold the honor of our father

Holy be your name • We acknowledge and proclaim that attribute of God that is preeminent – his holiness • As we relate to a holy Father, we begin to long for that holiness and ask to partake in it • We pray for the power to live holy lives • Your Kingdom come • Swear allegiance to Jesus as a present and coming king • Prepare for the return of the king • We tell of the impending end • We practice kingdom values

Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven • Seek to accept God’s will, approve God’s will, to do God’s will • Share in his passion for justice and righteousness • Remember and thank Jesus for submitting to the will of the Father • Give us this day our daily bread • We confess our daily need for God • We trust his provision

  5. Forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors • We confess our sin, against God and against man • Forgiveness costs • The challenge and joy of forgiving others • God’s power to forgive

  6. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil

God does not tempt • James 1:13-14: When tempted, no one should say, “God is tempting me.” For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone; but each one is tempted when, by his own evil desire, he is dragged away and enticed. • At its heart, in its essence, this petition is about asking God to lead us; ASKING TO BE LED • And when we ask to be led, we imply that WE WILL FOLLOW

When we pray this, we pray for - • God’s ­­­­­guidance through life’s journey • Life is a journey! • It is a journey of many battles • a journey where we are dependent on God and find His strength daily • Here, when we pray this, we are • Acknowledging that life is full of trial and temptation • Asking God to lead us in them

God’s perspective of our reality • there is a spiritual realm, apart from our physical realm • we must learn to view both as realities and both as a whole • 2 Corinthians 5:18 - So we fix our eyes on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal. • As both physical and spiritual beings, we are poised between these worlds.

  10. God’s protection against and throughtemptation • 1 Corinthians 10:13 that - God will not permit you to be tempted beyond what you are able to endure but when you are tempted he will also provide a way out that you may be able to withstand it.

  11. Four areas/battle-lines • Weakness of our fallen nature • we are asking God to protect us from ourselves. To not allow us to go where we want to go but where he leads. • Temptation surrounding us • It is contagious and overpowering if we don’t pray for God to protect us.

  12. False teaching • We must rely on the Bible as the primary authority on God and who he is. • Our very faith • The trials, sufferings and betrayals of life tempt us to question or even abandon our faith in God. • The primary assault of evil is against our faith. • The enemy’s intent is to breach our connection to God. Using accusation, trial, and temptation, he wants us to take our eyes off of God and to question his goodness, power, and love.

  13. The application of God’s victory over evil • In prayer, by faith, a believer appropriates and participates in Jesus’ victory in every spiritual and practical area of this life. • We pray holistically – for salvation, hope, justice, mercy
