  4. Resistance/Collaboration Paradigm • Developed in the 1960s within nationalist historiography. • Based on binary structures- resistance/collaboration. • Connected to anti-colonial movements in the 1950s and 1960s.

  5. ‘Primary’ and ‘Secondary’ resistance • Primary, 1880s-1890s: defensive, existing elites, secular. • Secondary: Offensive, ‘new’ men, religious dimensions.

  6. Accommodation Paradigm • Counters resistance/collaboration. • Based on notions of agency. • Explores non-violent forms of resistance. • Seeks a ‘holistic’ view of colonial society

  7. SamoriToure and the MandikeEmpre • Samori’s empire coalesced in 1878. • Struggled against neighbouring Tukolor Empire, led by AhmaduSeku. • France inflated this rivalry.
