Do Now: What observations can you make about how people lived? (What do you see?) How do you think this will impact their lives?
What conditions led to feudalism? • 1. Roman Empire collapses (~500 AD) • 2. Many Germanic tribes emerge (~500-700A.D) • 3. Kingdoms slowly emerge (Franks take the lead!) • 4. Charlemagne unites Europe (~800 AD) • 5. Lack of government protection post Charlemagne + Viking invasions Feudalism
Feudalism • Feudalism: a political system in which each class on a manor is responsible for contributing something to the community, and they also get a service in return
Now that you have been assigned a role and a manor, discuss with your group: • What type of service do you think each class on the manor was responsible for giving? What type of service do you think each got in return? • You may discuss this as a group but you must stay in your role!
How did feudalism provide for the needs of the people? • Provided stability! • Everyone had specific roles but they were dependent on others on the manor to fulfill basic needs (food, protection, housing, etc) • This ensured protection during a violent/unstable time • It also helped the kings govern more efficiently
Feudalism • Feudalism: a political system in which each class on a manor is responsible for contributing something to the community, and they also get a service in return • But you were born into your class • It was a system of mutual obligation where lords/kings/knights provided protection in exchange for loyalty and other types of services (food, labor, tools, etc).
MANORIALISM • MANORIALISM: ECONOMIC system that is structured around a manor/lord’s estate • A manor included one or more villages and the surrounding land • Each group in society had economic responsibilities
How was living under the feudal system difficult? • Read your assigned source and answer the question • Discuss/share answers with your group • Discuss together: Which class lived the best lifestyle? Which one lived the worst type of lifestyle? Explain your reasoning!
How was living under the feudal system difficult? • Knights- sent away from their famlies at 7 years old. Training was difficult and strict obeidience was required. Knights lived a violent lifestyle and participated in violent tournaments (jousts). They also had to protect castles and manors from attack. They also had to follow aCODE OF CHIVLARY which you will read about in your hw! • Merchants- were not really apart of the feudal system so they were not guaranteed protection. They were not forced to live on the manor but a career in trade/business was risky! • Serfs- were bound to the manor for life (no traveling!) and working the land was tough! They were responsible for feeding the entire manor and had to give a portion of their income (food they produced) to the lord to pay for housing and protection
Summary Question: How did feudalism function?
