  9. Types of Reading Text Literary passages provide entertainment or inspiration and include fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and drama. Informational passages are subject-matter centered and the language may be used to solve problems, raise questions, provide information, or present new ideas. The context of these passages includes everyday life outside of the classroom.

  16. Seven Smart Reading Strategies Step 1: Read and Box the title Step 2: Number the paragraphs and/or text features. Step 3: Read each paragraph and/or text feature. Stop and think about what you’ve read. Write 1 to 3 key words in the margin for each paragraph. Step 4: Read each question and underline 1 to 3 key words that connect back to the text. Step 5: Read each answer and eliminate wrong choices. Step 6: Prove your answer. Step 7: Mark your answer.

  17. FCAT Writing 2012 Grades 8 and 10 How will the scoring of the spring 2012 FCAT Writing assessment change? In addition to the elements of focus, organization, support, and conventions described in the rubrics, scoring decisions will include expanded expectations regarding the following: • Scoring will include increased attention to the correct use of standard English conventions. The current rubrics, which will be used for scoring in 2012, include expectations regarding the basic conventions of standard English, yet the scoring of this element in the past has been applied with leniency. Responses will continue to be scored holistically as draft writing, but scoring will be more stringent. Responses earning scores of 4 or 5 must at least generally follow the conventions of sentence structure, mechanics, usage, punctuation, and spelling. To earn a score of 6, sentence structure will be varied, and few, if any, errors will occur in mechanics, usage, punctuation, and spelling.

FCAT Writing 2012 (Grades 8 and 10) • Scoring will include increased attention to the quality of details, requiring use of relevant, logical, and plausible support, rather than contrived statistical claims or unsubstantiated generalities. The quality of the support depends on word choice, specificity, depth, relevance, and thoroughness. Responses earning high scores must include specific and relevant supporting details that clarify the meaning, i.e., the point of the paragraph or the central theme of the response. Rote memorization or overuse of compositional techniques, such as rhetorical questions, implausible statistics, or pretentious language, is not the expectation for quality writing at any grade level.

Algebra 1 EOC Exam How will students take the test? • The Algebra 1 EOC Assessment is delivered via a computer-based test (CBT) platform. • Paper-based versions (regular print and braille) will be provided for students with disabilities who require allowable accommodations, as specified in their Individual Educational Plans (IEPs) or Section 504 plans.

  24. Algebra 1 EOC Exam Test Administration Information • The assessment will be given in one 160-minute session with a 10-minute break after the first 80 minutes. Students will not be allowed to talk during the break. As with FCAT and FCAT 2.0 paper-based administrations, individual breaks may be allowed as needed. Students may not be dismissed during the first 80 minutes; however, after the 10-minute break, they may be dismissed as they complete the test. • Although the assessment is scheduled for a 160-minute session, any student not finished by the end of the 160 minutes may continue working. Testing must be completed within the same school day.

Geometry EOC Exam How will students take the test? • The Geometry EOC Assessment will be delivered via a computer-based test (CBT) platform. • Paper-based versions (regular print and braille) will be provided for students with disabilities who require allowable accommodations, as specified in their Individual Educational Plans (IEPs) or Section 504 plans.

  27. Geometry EOC Exam Test Administration Information • The assessment will be given in one 160-minute session with a 10-minute break after the first 80 minutes.   35. Math Tutoring • Ongoing, free peer tutoring provided by the Math Honor Society and overseen by one of our math teachers (Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:30pm-4:30pm in the virtual lab) • Free FCAT 2.0/EOC tutoring provided by some of our teachers (Mondays and Wednesdays from 3:30pm-4:30pm) Three Sessions- Session 1: Monday January 9th- Wednesday February 8th Session 2: Monday February 13th- Wednesday March 7th Session 3: Monday March 19th- Wednesday April 11th • Projected FCAT 2.0/EOC Saturday tutoring to be offered to all other students not invited to the initial tutoring sessions (to be announced for March or April).

  36. Reading/Writing Tutoring • Reading Lab on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2:40-3:40pm for high school in virtual lab and 3:40-4:40pm for middle school in Ms. Hernandez’s room 109B. • Free FCAT 2.0 Reading Target Tutoring provided by some of our teachers (Mondays and Wednesdays from 2:40pm-3:40pm for high school and 3:40pm-4:40pm for middle school) • Three Sessions- Session 1: Monday January 9th- Wednesday February 8th Session 2: Monday February 13th- Wednesday March 7th Session 3: Monday March 19th- Wednesday April 11th • FCAT Writing Seminar: February 21st- February 24th • FCAT Reading Seminar: March 20th-March 23rd • Projected FCAT 2.0 Reading Saturday Tutoring to be offered to all other students not invited to the initial tutoring sessions (to be announced for March or April).

Science Tutoring • The Science Department has some projected dates scheduled for tutoring for the Biology 1 EOC Exam (Science teachers will be announcing those dates in their classes) • Science teachers stay after school if students have any questions regarding homework, state exams, or Rube Goldberg Projects)
