¿Quién es el Señor Roberts? • Soy de Lockport, Nueva York (cerca de Buffalo) • Es mi noveno año aquí en HF-L • Yo viví en Salamanca, España y estudié a la Universidad de Salamanca. • También, viví en San José Costa Rica y estudié a la Universidad de Forester. • Trabajé a una escuela primaria para los migrantes. • Enseñé inglés a los niños españoles en España. • Me encanta mirar los deportes especialmente el fútbol americano y los Buffalo Bills.
¿Cómo es esta clase? • Spanish 4H is a higher level course that will continue your study of Spanish. • In this course you will expand your knowledge of the Spanish language through vocabulary and grammatical structures. • Also, you will explore interesting concepts through the use of the AP Spanish Language and Culture Themes. • You will be exposed to a variety of authentic resources including newspaper articles, magazines, podcasts, radio and television reports, and literature from the Spanish speaking world.
LAS REGLAS • Bring materials to class everyday. • Be on time and in your seat when the bell rings • Be responsible…for all materials, for the school, and for your actions • Be respectful…respect teachers and classmates • Participate…participation is essential to learning a new language • Raise your hand and wait to be called on! • Speak as much Spanish as possible, challenge yourself this year!!
LAS COSAS UTILES • two - three inch view binder • 7 dividers (Unidad #1,2,3,4,5,6,Repaso) • black and white composition notebook • jump/flash drive (recommended) • Spanish/English dictionary (for home use)

LA TAREA • Students will receive homework assignments three-four times per week on average. These assignments will be short and are designed to assess and reinforce skills and concepts. • Practicing vocabulary and grammar at home will ensure the students’ success in Spanish class. • NO late homework will be accepted. • Homework will be worth 15% of the final grade.
CLASSWORK & PARTICIPATION • Participation will be worth 5% and will be assessed every 10 weeks. • Classwork is work that is completed and collected during class. This is worth 5% of the marking period average.
LOS EXAMENES Y PRUEBAS • Tests will generally be given at the end of each unit/chapter. They will be based on topic vocabulary, grammar, and culture within that unit. • There will be many opportunities for review in class and study guides will always be provided. • Tests will be worth 30% of the final grade. • Quizzes may be announced or unannounced and given at different times throughout the units to see how we are doing on particular topics (about one per week). • Quizzes will be worth 20% of the final grade.
TMM LANGUAGE SOFTWARE • TMM (Tell Me More) is on-line independent language program that you will be expected to use throughout the year. • You will be required to complete one learning path/lesson every 5 weeks. • TMM will count as a quiz grade and be worth 20% of the final grade.
LOS PROYECTOS • The projects are designed to asses students in a different manner. • They will be related to the topics that are being currently covered in class and will vary from individual to group work. • Projects will be worth 25% of the final grade.
JOURNALS • Also, each 10 weeks you will be graded on your journals that will include many different activities. • Journal Sections: (Diarios, Tareas, Vocabulario Personal) • Journals will count as a project grade and be worth 25% of the final grade.
WHAT IS MCC DUAL CREDIT? • Dual credit is the opportunity to earn college credit during your high school career. • You can earn 5 COLLEGE CREDITS this year in Spanish. (Spa 103/113) • The cost is only $44 per credit or $220 per semester (plus a technology/records fee). • You must complete both the MCC registration form and the residency form on-line to enroll. • You will take final exams generated by the MCC professors and a few students will be selected to have a speaking exam with a MCC Spanish professor.
SPANISH HONOR SOCIETY • The HF-L "El Camino de Santiago de Compostela" Chapter was established by the HF-L LOTE Department in March 2011. The motto of our chapter is "Paso a Paso.“ • New members are inducted each March with a formal ceremony. Minimum Requirements for Application: • Students must be enrolled in a level 4 or level 5 language class. • Students must have a 92% cumulative average in LOTE. • Seniors that are members and are currently in a LOTE class will wear a red honor's cord and be recognized at graduation.
COSAS IMPORTANTES • Use Spanish in class as much as possible! If you don’t understand something I am saying in Spanish, ask in Spanish! • Respect your classmates and Señor Roberts and do not talk when others are talking. • Always use your resources before asking Señor. • If you are absent from class, it is YOUR responsibility to make-up work. • Find a way to study that works for you! • No cell phones in class. • If we end class early, do not line up at the door! • If you don’t understand something, PLEASE ASK! Feel free to e-mail me or let me know you want to stay after school. • Tutors will be available for those interested. • Check School Tool to see current class average. • Use the class website and other on-line resources.
TIPS TO LEARNING A FOREIGN LANGUAGE • To become fluent in a new language it will take many years of patience and hard work! • Don’t be afraid to make mistakes. Making mistakes is how you learn best! • Study Daily! • Use the class website. • Speak and write Spanish whenever you can. • Read Spanish whenever you can find something written in the language. • Listen to Spanish on the radio and TV.
