Purpose • Assess attitudes, beliefs, barriers, and facilitating factors among Kansas healthcare providers that influence the timing and delivery of childhood vaccinations. • Assess attitudes, beliefs, barriers, and facilitating factors among Kansas parents of children aged 0 -2 years that influence the timing and delivery of childhood vaccinations.
Study Design: Qualitative Semi-structured Interviews • The Challenge: Account for discrepancies between statistical inference, observed practice, and desirable practice. • Permits exploratory analyses for the purpose of framing hypotheses. • Appropriate when a deeper knowledge base is required for quantitative investigation. • The Goal: Discover how the subject sees the world and themselves, without taking the accuracy of the view for granted.
Sampling Frame for Parents • Random sample from private provider clinic. • Random sample from local health department clinics in the same county as participating private provider clinics.
Sampling Strategy - Triangulation • 3 clinics from each strata • 3 parents from each clinic
Sample Sizes • Private Provider Clinics: 27 • Parents • Dependent on the number of counties represented by the private providers • Maximum 162
Recruitment • Providers will be contacted by the research team through mail and telephone for informed consent. • Parents • Confidential mailing from their provider with OPT OUT cards • List of potential participants forwarded to research team • Research team randomly contacts parents for informed consent
Incentives • Providers: Choice of $125 gift certificate to national book store OR American Academy of Pediatrics’ Red Book • Parents: $20 gift certificate to Wal-Mart
Interviews • Providers • Face-to-Face • 1½ hours, tape recorded • May be conducted during breakfast/lunch • Parents • CATI • 1 hour, tape recorded • Conducted during recruitment call, after consent OR at a conveniently scheduled time
Analysis • NVivo software: Non-numeric Unstructured Data Index Searching and Theorizing • Salient themes • Frequency of themes • Recommendations for hypothesis testing
