The eXemplar Programme • Why eXemplars • Building on the Demonstration Process • What Industry told us • Capturing ‘what’ has been done • Capturing ‘how’ it was done • Becoming an eXemplar ‘Exemplar: ‘An example of something worthy of being imitated or copied’’
To help industry achieve ‘Best Value Low Carbon’ outcomes in the most efficient manner • Build on the Demonstration Programme: • Review the whole process from inception to in use • Measure the key components in more detail • Link low carbon and ‘rethinking’ agendas • Show relationship between standards and process • Provide more detailed case studies
Building on the Demos • Adopting ‘rethinking’ principles • Deliver Best Value Sustainable solutions • Achieve measured standards • Covering entire lifecycle from planning to post occupancy • ‘How’ as well as ‘what’ was done
What Industry Told us • Need a focal point for information using real projects • Should be linked to the Low Carbon Agenda • Measurement is important but not an end in itself • Capture ‘how’ as well as ‘what’ was done • Explain strategy for obtaining added value • Cover the entire project lifecycle • Client leadership and involvement are critical • Must be willing to share learning
Capturing what’s been done • Achieving measured minimum standards: • Economic • Social & community • Environmental • In-use • Narrative linked to the above metrics which will produce the Case Study
Using the ‘Business Excellence Model’ Enablers Results Approach Deployment Outputs People Customers Society Leadership People Policy & Strategy Resources Processes STRATEGY PERFORMANCE ACTION
Application stage – download via web • Initial interview – scope and strategic overview • Panel Approval • Data capture process: • What does an eXemplar consider? • A framework for assessment • What makes a project exemplary • Analysis and reporting • Case study • Dissemination
Environmental Underpinned by… Post Construction and in-use Sustainability Economic Social The Outcomes The process – from options to construction
Economic issues Overall cost Cost predictability Time predictability Quality/ defects Social issues Health & safety Employee satisfaction Local supply chain engaged Training/ skills increase Community engagement Wider community benefits
Environmental issues Overall environmental sustainability Building energy in use Energy & water use during construction Materials – environmental impacts Materials – responsible sourcing Waste management Protecting ecology Post Construction Client satisfaction Contractor satisfaction Supply chain success Handover Post Occupancy Evaluation …these issues may evolve/ change over time to reflect what is seen to be important to the industry
For each headline there are a range of ‘metrics’ that can be used to measure performance • Using industry benchmarks minimum standards can be set to ensure a good ‘all round’ project • Areas of exemplary performance can then be highlighted and explained
Demonstrate innovation exceeding normal industry practice in some areas • Must achieve minimum standards in all other key areas
The Process: Analysis • Choose which area(s) show exemplary performance • Interviews at key stages of the project, to show how performance and successes were achieved • Key ‘causes and effects’ that could be repeated on other projects are identified Options appraisal Detailed Design Practical completion Post Construction
The Process – Analysis Report • Analysis report provided to assist continual improvement • Key learning points will be incorporated in a published case study
Pilot Case Studies • Four project teams have helped pilot and refine the Exemplar methodology • Useful learning from these projects have been included in Pilot Case Studies • Each demonstrated excellent core sustainability principles & performed well under the methodology • Build on these to drive industry forward
The Process: Case studies Full project: • Ongoing analysis at key stages throughout the life of the project producing ‘living’ case studies • Overall case study produced at post occupancy stage Condensed project: • Retrospective analysis of completed projects producing single case study
Dissemination • Case studies via CEW, BRE & KTN websites • Sustainable Building Portal: • More detailed interactive case studies • Video clips of installations, interviews, etc • Direct links to products/ systems used • Events and Seminars: • Items of interest arising out of eXemplars
Use of MBE KTN • Case study area to present best practice & innovative products and/or solutions • Forum for info on live, ongoing projects • Discussion threads for discussing issues with other interested parties • Details of events and items of interest
Next Steps • To apply go to ‘www.exemplar.org.uk’ • Follow up regional seminars to go into more detail
