COLLEGE ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS UNIV. OF CALIF. (UC) Same 3 yrs., 4 or more recommended 2 yrs., 3 rec. (must include 1 yr of chem. or physics) Same 2 yrs., 3 recommended Same Same Must submit SAT I or ACT. Tests must include Writing as well Some majors or colleges may also require or strongly encourage SAT II (Subject Tests) CAL STATE UNIV. (CSU) • CP English 4 yrs. • Math (Alg.1, Geom., Alg. 2) 3 yrs. • Lab Science 2 yrs. • Social Science (1 yr WC + US Hist) 2 yrs. • World Language 2 yrs. • CP Electives 1 yr. • Visual/Performing Arts 1 yr. Reporting SAT & ACT Scores 4 reports in cost of test: • NCAA must have results – 9999 • NAIA must have results – 9876 • CSU system (all CSUs) code for SAT – 3594 • UC system – send to one UC you’re applying to, all will have access • Private/Independent/Out-of-State – send individually • Some scholarships may require scores
NCAA & NAIACollege Athletics NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) • Required for Division I or II • Clearinghouse Eligibility – check with your counselor • Current and final transcripts will be required. YOU must submit AHC transcripts (done through AHC) NAIA (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics) • Separate from NCAA • Similar to NCAA but covers many smaller Christian colleges • Westmont College is an NAIA school
FINANCIAL AID • GIFT AID • Need based or merit-based • Scholarships/Grants • Don’t repay • SELF-HELP AID • Need-based or non-need based • Loans • Will need to repay
FAFSA • Most important piece of the financial aid puzzle – determines eligibility for grants/loans/work study programs • Must file for Federal, State, Campus & some private $ • File date: January 1 to March 2 • Will have Financial Aid Night at SYHS in January • FAFSA Website: www.fafsa.ed.gov • GPA Verification Form: required for Cal Grants • PROFILE: for Private Colleges along with FAFSA • PIN: Get now!: www.pin.ed.gov “CASH FOR COLLEGE” Thursday, Feb. 5, 2015 Help in completing FAFSA
SCHOLARSHIPS • Based on activities, academic merit, athletics, intended major, ethnic origin, religion, parent employer or any other combination of factors • Review Scholarship Handbook – deadlines throughout the year • Santa Barbara Foundation – deadline late January • Local Scholarships – deadline will be in February or March

NARROWING THE FIELD • Types of Colleges • Community College • CSU • UC • Private • Out-of-State • Specialty or Vocational • PRIORITIZE • Have a “reach school” and a “sure bet”
CALCULATING YOUR G.P.A. Use the following guideline to determine your GPA that many colleges will use. This is especially true for the UC and CSU systems. • Find your 10-12 weighted andunweighted GPA • Split the difference between the two GPA’s. • Example: • Weighted: 3.60 • Unweighted: 3.00 • Calculated GPA for colleges = 3.30 • GPA is based on A-G courses from sophomore and junior years. • Admission is based on A-G courses from all four years, including senior year.
ADDITIONAL FACTORS • CSU: • No essays or Letters of Recommendation • UC • Students required to write two essays with option for 3rd • No Letters of Recommendation • Extracurricular activities (sports, clubs, work, etc.) • PRIVATE • Will want essays and Letters of Recommendation • Extracurricular activities (sports, clubs, work, etc.)

Check in Guidance Office or website for schools, dates and times • Campus Visits • Catalogs, Resource handbooks • Internet
WHEN TO APPLY • UC’s and CSU’s have November filing period • Deadline to submit application NOVEMBER 30 • CSU’s begin accepting apps October 1 • UC app is open now, can’t submit until November 1 • Private/Independent/ Out-of-State vary • A lot of schools have January 1 deadline but it is your responsibility to find out! • Early Decision vs. Early Application
LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION • Do not use for UC or CSU • Will need for Private Colleges & some scholarships • Complete Letter of Recommendation Form (available on SYHS Guidance page – College Information and from English teacher and in Guidance Office) • Always talk to person you ask for letter. See what they need from you. • Give at least two weeks notice. • Remember to thank those who help you!
THE COLLEGE COUNTDOWN • October • Gather info, prepare applications, complete PROFILE. • For CSU’s, can send application. • Request Letters of Recommendations if applying Early Application to private schools – check deadlines • November • Complete submission for UC and CSU (deadline is the 30th) • November through February • Submit private, out-of-state applications • January- February • Submit FAFSA • GPA Verification
COUNTDOWN continued… • March – May • Submit any additional information requested by colleges • Housing • Money • CHECK PORTALS! • April • Notification of Financial Aid by colleges • May 1 • SIR – the day you commit – deposit money due • GRADUATION on May 29! • SUMMER – Orientation and Registration
IMPORTANT TIPS • Letters of Recommendation – be prepared and plan ahead – two weeks notice • No “cute” email addresses • Clean up your Facebook, Instagram and Twitter accounts! • Make copies of everything you send • Get Certificate of Mailing if using snail mail • Check your junk email • Check & double check dates and deadlines • Most colleges communicate by email and/or portal • Write down passwords for each account!
