  7. Counseling Center RHS Counselors provide 1. Academic Support 2. Personal-Social Development 3. Career Exploration

RHS Counselor Services • Provide support for the academic, personal, and social needs of students through individual counseling and through group counseling. • Act as a consultant to teachers, parents and administration in regards to students' educational and personal needs. • Provide referral information for students and parents relating to outside support agencies and services. • Provide information and coordination on testing and assessments. • Provide college and career information and resources for students and parents. • Provide group instruction to support The High School and Beyond Plan. • Provide ongoing support and information regarding academic requirements and graduation.

High School • Socially: friendships are usually made with others who share common interests and values, goals, involvement in clubs or sports, etc. • More freedoms • Your grades matter and are never to be removed from your transcript • Appropriate dress and good personal hygiene is important! • Missing more than 4 days/semester negatively impacts your grades, particularly in ‘lab’ classes such as PE and Science

Washington StateGraduation Requirements Four statewide requirements as determined by the State Board of Education: • Pass a minimum number of credits in high school classes. • Earn a Certificate of Academic Achievement [High School Proficiency Exam (HSPE) for Reading and Writing, and the End of Course Exams in Algebra, Geometry, and Biology. (Legislation pending) • Complete a Senior Culminating Project • Craft a High School and Beyond Plan

RHS Graduation Requirements • English 4.0 credits • Math (Alg 1, Geometry, Alg 2) 3.0 credits • Social Studies 3.5 credits • Science 3.0 credits • Career & Technical Ed (CTE) 1.0 credits • Health and Fitness 2.0 credits • Arts 1.0 credits • Pathways 1.0 credits (.25 per year) • Electives 4.0 credits • Total 22.5 credits

  14. Need to Know Policies • ATTENDANCE Students limited to 11 absences per semester. After 11 absences, student is at risk for losing credit for that class. Attendance is important and students struggle when they are not in school consistently. • SCHEDULE CHANGE PROCEDURE Must be within the first six (6) days of the semester: Student completes Schedule Change Request Form and returns to the counselor within the appropriate time. Counselor meets with the student to determine appropriateness of request and to advise student and/or parent. IF A CLASS IS OPENand it is within the first six (6) days of the semester, schedule changes are considered for the following reasons only: • Student needs to take a required course • Inappropriate skill level/placement • Lack of prerequisite • Taken and received credit previously • Previously failed subject with the same teacher • Mechanical error (e.g., missing periods, double scheduled periods, canceled or newly-formed classes) • A change in educational plans or goals of the student

  15. Pathways Pathways is a life skills and planning curriculum for students in grades 9 through 12. It aims to help students make clear, careful and creative plans for life beyond high school. It is designed to: • Encourage student engagement • Enhance student achievement • Involve parents or guardians • Pathways is a required class

Opportunities for College Credit in High School • Advanced Placement Program Current AP courses offered at Rochester High School for juniors and seniors include: AP Language & Comp, AP Literature, AP Human Geography and AP Environmental Science. • Running Start Provides juniors and seniors the opportunity to attend the college tuition-free and earn credits which translate into high school credits. • Articulation Agreements with Local Colleges (Formerly Tech Prep) Tech Prep Funding was eliminated, but some articulation agreements are still in place.
