What is Arthritis? • arthro- Joint itis- Inflammation • Inflammation of joint including cartilage and bone in the joint • Leading cause of chronic disability
Symptoms • Joint pain • Stiffness • Locking of joint • Swelling • Creaking
Causes • Hereditary • Developmental • Metabolic • Mechanical • Trauma • Weak muscles • Obesity
Two Types • Primary • Caused by aging, loss of water in cartilage • Secondary • obesity, sports injuries, diabetes, etc.
How does it Look • Bone spurs • Cartilage loss
Step 1 Treatment • Weight control, Exercise, Rest • Knee Brace • Walking, Swimming, Elliptical • Heat before, Ice after
Step 2 Treatment • Medical • NSAIDs- Be careful!!! • Glucosamine- Iffy, takes 3 months for effect • Icy Hot, Ben Gay, Capsaisin Cream • Lidocaine/Corticosteroid Injections- Only 3/yr • 1/3 nadda, 1/3 temporary, 1/3 good relief • Viscous Supplementation- series of 3 shots • Surgery- Total Knee Replacement- Older Age
Summary • Prevention- Exercise keeps cartilage hydrated • Weight loss • Heat, Ice, Rest, Glucosamine, Icy Hot • Visit to your Dr. for medications, injections • Surgery could be best case scenario
Question 1 • Can I exercise with asthma? • YES! • Exercise will reduce the number and severity of your asthma by boosting your immune system. • Use inhaler • Ease into exercise to prevent attack • Avoid cold, dry environments • Keep close contact with your doctor
Question 2 • Can I get rid of my cellulite with exercise? • Cellulite is subcutaneous fat (90% women) • Because cellulite is fat, increasing caloric output will reduce cellulite • No such thing as Spot Reduction • Some of it is genetic • Creams, treatments, massage, DOES NOT WORK!!!
Question 3 • Does exercising on an empty stomach burn more fat? • Although everyone is different, I wouldn’t recommend it • Morning- 8+ hours fasting, blood sugars are low • Body is more efficient at burning fat in “fed” state • 300 calories is 300 calories no matter when you burn it • Might not burn any fat if exercising on empty stomach
Question 4 • At the gym, there is a “fat burning zone.” Is this better? • No • This is misleading. There are 3 zones. Fat Burn, Aerobic, and High Intensity. • Fat burn- More proportional fat, fewer calories • Aerobic- More fat and glucose, High Calories. Fast Pace • High Intensity- Mainly glucose and glycogen. This is at sprint speed!
Question 5 • Should I workout if I am sick? • If it is a head cold, sure. • If it is in your chest, best to refrain until it clears up • Body needs rest to clear up infection, some light exercise may be beneficial. • Listen to your body when trying to get back into pre-illness shape.
Question 6 • Which is better if I could just do one. Weight train or cardio? • Weight training!!! Recent study ~9,000 aged 20-80 showed that after adjusting for cardiopulmonary fitness, those who had greater muscular strength had fewer deaths from cancer and cardiovascular disease!!!
