Facts concerning Arthritis • Nearly one in five Australians have Arthritis. • By 2050 it is predicted that 7 million Australians will have arthritis. • There are more than 100 types of arthritis which are divided into 4 majors: Osteoarthritis, Osteoporosis, Rheumatoid arthritis and juvenile arthritis.
What is Arthritis? • Arthritis is a form of joint disorder that involves inflammation of one or more joints. This has occurred from a bone moving another bone. This can make the bone in severe pain and a case where it is unable to move. • The different types of arthritis are Osteoarthritis, Rheumatoid arthritis and osteoporosis. • It is commonly believed that arthritis only effects seniors and while it is true that the likelihood of contracting arthritis increases with age, arthritis can be found in people of all ages. In fact, in 2002 there were over 300,000 reported cases of arthritis in those under the age of 17
Osteoarthritis • Osteoarthritis is one of the most common forms of Arthritis. • It is characterised by the cartilage being worn down. Cartilage usually cushions the joint where the bones meet. • Most common sites where Osteoarthritis occurs are the knees, neck, lower back, hips and fingers. • Osteoarthritis is a degenerative disease, meaning it becomes worse over time and leads to reduced functioning such as the inability to write, walk or stand.
Rheumatoid Arthritis • Rheumatoid arthritis is characterised by inflammation of the joints. • It is a autoimmune disease where the immune systems attacks the tissue lining the joints resulting in inflammation. • Presents itself in a symmetrical fashion that if one hand is affected the other hand is too. • Chronic inflammation slowly wears the bone down resulting in a decreased quality of life.
Osteoporosis • Osteoporosis is a disease where bone density deteriorates, leaving the bone weak and more prone to fracture. • The most common sites for osteoporosis and fractures as a result is the spine, hip and wrist.
Why has it been selected by NHPA? • Although arthritis type conditions do not contribute highly too mortality figures they do contribute high rates of morbidity. Arthritis type conditions account for approximately 5% of the burden of disease • More than 15% of the population had some form of arthritis and over half a million Australians had osteoporosis in 2008. • Osteoarthritis ( a type of arthritis) affected over 1.6 million Australians in 2008. • In 2008 the overall prevalence of arthritis was 18% for females and 13% for males.
How this contributes to burden of disease? • Living with arthritis is under the category of living with a disability which effects the burden of disease ratio. 3.1 million Australians are affected by this disease. • 1.6 million are affected by osteoarthritis • 428,000 are affected by rheumatoid arthritis
Risk Factors • Behavioural: Smoking- it is known that smoking tobacco can increase the risk of developing certain types of arthritis. Specifically, rheumatoid arthritis. • Biological: Body weight- Those who are overweight and obese are more likely to contract arthritis. Often, this is as a result of more wear and tear being put on the joints. • Social: Work- It is also not uncommon for people in certain professions that have to preform repetitive tasks to develop arthritis. For example, someone who spends a great deal of time writing online might be more likely to develop arthritis.
