New Jersey Plan • This was also known as the Small States Plan or the Paterson Plan • This plan was made as an alternate plan to the Virginia Plan. • This (The Virginia Plan) frightened the smaller states.
What was it? • The Proposal • Proposed By William Paterson in response to the Virginia plan. • This was proposed as a structure for the US government. • This plan would give even the smaller states equal representation under the legislature. • The New Jersey plan also gave power to regulate trade and to raise money by taxing all foreign goods.
Compromise • The less populated states were adamantly opposed to giving most of the control of the national government to the larger states. • They proposed an alternate plan that would have given one vote per state for equal representation under one legislative body. • This was a compromise for the issue of the houses. • Ultimately, the New Jersey plan was rejected and the Virginia plan was used.
