Lauren Heald, Ellen Anderson, Jill Pinder Exploration of the Local Food Market in Portland Oregon-Research Question: How do consumers shape the local food market, specifically in Portland Oregon? Farms Methodology: -Made questions to ask farmers about the Portland food system tying back to our research question -Interviewed the farmers in person at Sauvie Island -iOs is used for answering survey questions Results: -Farmers have to have a connection with the community for their products to be well known -Farmers are working toward achieving organic certification -Farms are positively related the presence of a farmers market Importance: -Needed for consumers and restaurants to have food Restaurants Methodology: -Detailed analysis of discussions on local food -Qualitative data using Urbanspoon -Looked at different income of restaurants -Created different categories (egorganic, seasonal, and local products to an emphasis on Portland culture) in a spreadsheet to record data Results: -Restaurants want to cater to their local community -Freshness and locality is emphasized. -Overall each economic group Has different pattern. Importance: -The overal patterns help to see the emphis of local food use in Portland -Clarify a connection between Portland practices and consumer motivations towards buying local food -Food movements(more info needed) Consumers Methodology: -Interview Portland people about their local food services -iOs used to answer survey questions -Try to get a wide range of age and gender Results: -The middle class favors the farmers markets -Most customers are willing to pay for local food as opposed to standard food -Consumers like to buy organic rather than non-organic -Enjoys the convenience of local of local and organic food Importance: -Local food movements(more info needed) Conclusion -In this section we will be talking about how our three above topics relate to each other and can only function when all three are present this will tie into our research question as well.
