  2. Remember … • Is a statement that expresses the main ideas of your paper and answers the questions posed by your paper.

  3. Keeps the Reader Focused • Offers your reader a quick and easy way to follow what the paper will be discussing.

  4. Thesis Tips • Should limit and focus your research • Has 2 parts: Your topic and the analysis, explanation, or assertion that you wish to prove about your topic. • Is very specific • Appears at the end of your introduction • As you take notes you can adjust but not change your thesis.

  5. Organization of a Thesis • Can start out as a question • Can compare or contrast two or more things. • Can prove or disprove a theory or idea • Can summarize information on your subject

  6. Examples • Look at the examples on the following slides and decide which ones are • Too narrow • Too Broad • Properly Focused

  7. Example # 1 • How are new sports added to the Olympics? • What is the history of the Olympics? • What do each of the colors in the Olympic ring symbolize?

  8. Example #2 • How have magicians been viewed throughout history? • Where can you buy the best magic wands in Detroit? • How were Harry Houdini’s most famous escapes performed?

  9. Example # 3 • How do computer manufacturing and use compare in the U.S. and Japan? • How do you use the function key on your home computer? • How are computer games used to teach math skills to junior high students?

  10. Example # 4 • How does weather affect our lives? • What are the latest developments in hurricane tracking? • What is the worst storm I ever experienced?

  11. Example # 5 • What are the most popular male hairstyles at FQMS? • Why have men’s hairstyles changed through the ages? • How have changes in men’s hairstyles since WWII reflected changes in values?

  12. Example # 6 • How did the Chernobyl nuclear disaster of 1985 affect Russia? • How have nations reacted to the building of nuclear power plants? • How many nuclear power plants are there in Zambia?

  16. Example # 10 • What are the qualities and flaws of the electoral college system? • How have members of the electoral college from Idaho usually voted in the past? • How does democracy work?

  17. Read the Current Events Article called Cyberbullied Teens Say It’s Time To Stop the Hate • Develop 5 questions you would want to know more about. • Create a thesis statement based on your 5 questions to share with the class.

Possible Questions? • What is the age group most impacted by this type of problem? • Why are victims allowing this to occur? • How many kids have died or been threatened by cyberbullies? • Why are bullies using this medium to get their point across? • What role do parents play in all of this? • What types of cites does cypberbullying occur? • Is this just one REALLY extreme case? • What are the laws in regard to protecting those on-line? • What precautions can be taken to avoid this problem? • Do new laws need to be created to keep up with technology?
