Algebraic expression – A mathematical phrase that includes one or more variables. Numerical expression – A mathematical phrase that ONLY includes numbers and operation symbols. Evaluate – To input values into an algebraic expression and simplify the resulting numerical expression. Simplify – To reduce an expression completely.
Variable – A symbol that represents an unknown quantity Coefficient – The number in front of a variable. Constant – A number NOT attached to a variable. Distribute – to multiply the number/variable OUTSIDE THE PARENTHESES by all of the numbers/variables INSIDE THE PARENTHESES
Sum – The result of addition. Difference – The result of subtraction. Product – The result of multiplication. Quotient – The result of division.
Greatest Common Factor - The largest integer that divides evenly into each of a given set of numbers. Lowest Common Multiple - The smallest positive integer into which two or more integers divide evenly. Reciprocal – A fraction after its numerator and denominator have been FLIPPED.
Perfect Square – the result of multiplying a rational number by itself. Radical – the square root symbol. Cube – to multiply a number by itself three times. Origin - On the coordinate plane, the point (0, 0). The point of intersection of the x- and y-axes.
Ordered Pair - the pair of numbers giving the location of a point. Coordinate – an ordered pair. X-axis – the horizontal axis. Y-axis – the vertical axis. Quadrant - The four sections into which the coordinate plane is divided by the x- and y-axes.
Rationalnumber – Any number that can be written as a fraction. A decimal that either terminates or repeats. Irrationalnumber – Any number that CANNOT be written as a fraction. A decimal that never terminates and never repeats. Integer – Positive AND NEGATIVE whole numbers. WholeNumber – 0, 1, 2, 3, 4…..to infinity. NaturalNumber – 1, 2, 3, 4…..to infinity.
Multiplicative inverse - the same thing as reciprocal. A number and its reciprocal multiply to equal 1. Reciprocal - a fraction flipped upside down. Base– The number that is multiplied as many times as the exponent indicates. Exponent – The number that indicates how many times the base is multiplied.
