Are teachers considered “professionals’? • Professions have certification and licenseboards who govern the admittance to their profession. • These boards also regulate, evaluate and dismiss members of their profession. • Who does this for the educators? • Who ultimately controls teacher licensing? The state legislature. • Who hires the teacher?
What is teacher training? • Back to the requirements and the process! • It normally occurs in a higher education institution and after prospective teachers take a set of University or College required “basic or core” courses, they them enter their “professional program”.
A sample Teacher Training program • Normally will consist of : • Meeting the college or university’s Basic Core of Courses • Special training in their field of choice. Normal concentrations are: • NOW • Elementary Education P-K-6/8 or 9 • Secondary Education 7-12 • Being involved in a practicum or “student teaching” • State licenser and certification. Licensee to teach in public schools
Certification ensures – • that you have meet minimum requirements to teach in a specific area. • “Your license has listed areas of certification”!
