  3. Learning Circus Background A Learning Circus creates a context for collaborative student inquiry. Stations are set up around the classroom containing student activities; all illustrating key concepts associated with a broad unifying theme. What makes a circus approach interesting and effective is that it provides motivational learning context in which the students are actively engaged in exploring, discussing, and synthesizing information. At each station in the circus, students are provided instructions and a set of guided reflection questions. In this fraction learning circus, students will rotate and work at each of the four different stations once. The goal is for the students to develop a thorough understanding of the concepts of fractions. Since there are only four stations, the classroom will be set up so that there are two of each station. Therefore, during the first rotation there will be eight groups of 3-4 students, two groups at Equal Fractions, two groups at Adding/Subtracting Fractions, two groups at Multiplying/Dividing, and two groups at Sorting Fractions.

  4. Overview Assessment • Students will be assessed formatively by completion of the discovery guides and group participation, followed by a class discussion. Standard NCTM • Numbers and Operations • Grade 6-8 • Students will understand numbers, ways of representing numbers, and number systems • Work flexibly with fractions, decimals, and percents to solve problems; • Students will understand meaning of operations and how they relate to one another • Understand the meaning and effects of arithmetic operations with fractions, decimals, and integers.

  5. Student Materials • Introduction • Discovery Guides • Station #1 Equal Fractions • Station #2 Adding/Subtracting Fractions • Station #3 Multiplying/Dividing Fractions • Station #4 Sorting Fractions

  6. Introduction This fraction learning circus is designed to help you review the different operations of fractions. You will learn that fractions are a very important factor to learn about, because of there significance in your everyday lives. This learning circus will help you to master your skills involving fractions, which will help you with your future math experiences and prepare you for the real world. In groups of 3-4, you will rotate about four stations in the classroom. You will have about 15 minutes at each station to complete the discovery guide with your peers.

  7. Discovery Guide #1Equal Fractions • Complete the Equal Fractions worksheet. The second part of the worksheet requires you to visit a specific website and complete an online activity. Part 1 How many parts of the box would you have to color in to give you half (1/2) of the box? Part 2 Visit this Equivalent Fractions Activity, complete 5 fractions, and record 4 equivalent fractions to each of the five fractions.

  8. Discovery Guide #2Adding/Subtracting Fractions • Complete the discovery guide as a group. Part 1 Complete the following examples. Show all work. • ½ + 1/3 b. ¾ + ¼ c. 1/8 + 1/4 d. 5/4 – 1/3 e. 2/3 – 1/6 f. ¾ - ½ Part 2 Visit the Fractions - Adding and Subtracting fractions - Workout and complete the internet activity. Be sure to record all problems that you work out, and the work that goes along with solving that specific problem. Record all of your answers on your worksheet as well. Remember to work together in your groups.

  9. Discovery Guide #3Multiplying/Dividing Fractions • Complete the discovery guide as a group. Part 1 Complete the following examples. Show all work. Part 2 Visit the Fractions - Rectangle Multiplication – NLVM and complete the internet activity. Be sure to record all of your problems and answers on your discovery guide. If you happen to come across a problem with the problems, click on the show me tab.

  10. Discovery Guide #4Sorting Fractions Complete the discovery guide as a group. Be sure to record all of your answers on the worksheet. Part 1 • With your group, sort through the given fractions, and form three groups, fractions near 0, fractions near 1/2 , and fractions near 1. • Within your group, decide which fraction is the largest and which is the smallest. Be sure to justify your answers. • Order the fractions from least to greatest. Part 2 Name a Fraction
