  2. OPERATIONS WITH FRACTIONS We NEED to find a common denominator when we ADD or SUBTRACT fractions We do NOT NEED to find a common denominator when we MULTIPLY or DIVIDE fractions

Adding Fractions Find a common denominator Change one or both fractions so the denominator is the same and ADD the numerators together (remember, if you multiply the denominator by a number to change it, you MUST multiply the numerator by the same number). When you add fractions, you DO NOT add the denominators together. ½ + ⅓ =

  4. Subtracting Fractions To subtract fractions: 1. find common denominator. 2. Subtract the numerators 3. Reduce/change to a mixed number. ¾ − ⅛ =

  5. Multiplying Fractions To multiply fractions: 1. multiply numerators straight across. 2. Multiply denominators straight across 3. Reduce/change to a mixed number. ⅚ × ⅕ =

  6. Dividing Fractions To divide fractions: 1.Keep the first fraction the same. 2.Change ÷ into × 3.Flip the second fraction. ⅜ ÷ ⅘ =

  7. Improper fractions are fractions that have a greater numerator than denominator. To simplify improper fractions, find out how many times the denominator will fit in the numerator. This becomes your whole number... IN other words, divide the numerator by the denominator. The result should be a whole number. If there is a remainder, that becomes the new numerator with the original denominator on the bottom. 42 8 25 4
