Richard Wright • Born on September 4, 1908 in Roxie, Mississippi • He was the grandson of slaves and the son of a sharecropper • He was mostly raised by his mother, who was forced to raise her sons alone after her husband left the family when Richard was 5 years old. • He was only able to attend school through 9th grade, but after he left, he kept reading by forging a note so that he could get a library card • He published his first short story at the age of 16, he won many literary awards for writing after that, and became a famous writer of the Harlem Renaissance • He wanted to leave the Jim Crow South, and eventually moved to Chicago, New York, Mexico, and eventually Paris. • He is known for writing both fiction and nonfiction such as Native Son, Uncle Tom’s Children, Black Power, White Man Listen! and Black Boy. • He died in 1960 in Paris.
