  12. So, why did the uprising take place in eastern Chiapas, also known as the “last frontier”? • First, eastern Chiapas is isolated from the rest of the state. In terms of transportation and markets, it is difficult to get in and out. • Second, the people of eastern Chiapas are by far the poorest in the state, with the least access to basic services such as running water and electricity, health services, schools, work, or commerce. • Third, eastern Chiapas has a large population of Protestants, who may be more democratic and open to change than their traditional Catholic counterparts. • The Zapatistas demand rights for the rural and poor peasants of Chiapas who produce for subsistence. They demand rights for indigenous and non-indigenous peoples, women, men, and children.
