Why did the Creoles lead the fight? Latin American Independence
To Remember When Writing A DBQ Essay! • Thesis • Uses all but one of the supplied documents ( TRY TO USE THEM ALL) & document each when used • Analyze documents --- don’t summarize • Analyze authors’ POV • One paragraph explaining need for one more type of document • (Find your “PERFECT MONGOL DBQ” if you need a reminder)
BUCKETS • Look over all your documents and organize them into analytical categories (BUCKETS). • I came up with 3!
A & B C & D E & F Emerging National Economic Interests Fear of Social Unrest Identity
Create the THESIS!!!! • The ? + your buckets = THESIS!!!!
The Thesis • The Creoles led the fight for Latin American independence for several reasons. First, the Creoles felt a new sense of national identity. Also, they wanted to protect their economic interests and counter social unrest.

Today’s Task • Write the Thesis, Additional Document Paragraph & the First Bucket Paragraph! • Within your 1st Bucket Paragraph- tackle a document’s POV! • Use your perfect Mongol DBQ as a guide! • Additional Document Paragraph Example: • A document written by a common Mongol soldier involved in the conquests would give more insight into attitudes toward the Mongols. A rank-and-file soldier would allow a more complete analysis of insider attitudes about the Mongols, especially as there is only one Mongol viewpoint given by an elite man, the shaman of Genghis Khan himself, (Doc. 1). A powerful holy man would have received booty from conquest, creating a positive attitude, but it is not possible to tell if a common soldier felt the same way. POV example on next slide- let me know when you need it!
Tackling a POV! • The following is an example of tackling the POV of a document within your body paragraph. This is only one aspect of the body paragraph. Of course you will need more! • Juvaini, a Muslim Persian, felt that the Mongols were ruthless killers who did not value educated people, (Doc. 7). His attitude was one of clear loathing for a people that he viewed as the murderers of his people. Juvaini may be influenced also by the fact only a short period of time had passed between his writing and the Mongol conquest, making him more negative, as these events were fresh in his memory.
