What is GNAA? • The Guildford Native American Association was founded in early 1970's. • The native population of this area were known as the "the invisible community" and the opportunities to improve their status economically, socially, and educationally were very scarce. • A group of American Indians formed an alliance known as the Guildford Native American Associate, or GNAA, to help foster their culture • It was originally funded by the North Carolina Commission of Indian Affairs, local, state, and national Lutheran organizations, Guildford County, and a variety of federal agencies. • The GNAA is a multipurpose organization that serves the local native population of over 5,000 people and is run by a board of directors made up of 10 people.
How is this related to Nutrition? • “Cherokee men and women are twice as likely to be obese as members of other racial and ethnic groups in North Carolina. The prevalence rate of type 2 diabetes among Cherokee men and women combined is 23.8%. This rate is more than three times the combined rate for men and women from all other racial and ethnic groups in North Carolina.” • - Cherokee Choices, NC • Native Americans are genetically disposed to many nutrition related diseases, especially diabetes • Many Native Americans have moved away from eating traditionally native foods, especially in urban areas such as Greensboro
How can we help? • How can the native people go back to eating healthy foods in an urban area? • Plant a GARDEN • My role with the GNAA is to create nutrition education in conjunction with the Garden Committee to create lessons and demonstrations that encourage healthy eating and consumption of Native Foods.
What is the GNAA up to? • There has been a late start to the planting for the GNAA garden due to inclement weather… thus no pictures yet • Nutrition Education lesson took place on April 22nd! • Canning workshop with the help from NC Cooperative Extension will also take place!
