MBHS STAR TESTING2011-2012 Information
WHAT ARE THE STAR TESTS? • Thursday, April 26 Mission Bay students (9-11 grades) begin a series of five testing periods of STAR testing. • STAR tests are taken by ALL students in California public schools from grades 2-11. • STAR tests measure specifically what all California students are expected to know and be able to do in English language are mathematics, science, and social studies or history.
WHY ARE THESE TESTS SO IMPORTANT? • INDIVIDUAL STUDENT SCORES: • Help our school determine if you have reached content standards or if you need more help. Your scores will determine whether or not you are placed in additional support classes next year such as CAHSEE Prep and full-year math or English classes at 9th, 10th and 11th grades instead of one term courses. • Counselors use this information to determine which English, science, math class you are scheduled to take next year • REPUTATION of Mission Bay High School and its Diploma with colleges/universities • SCHOOL-WIDE SCORES: • Measure MBHS against other high schools to see how effective our programs are in supporting student achievement. STAR is the school’s Report Card for parents, community, the school district, and the state and federal government.
HOW ARE THESE SCORES REPORTED? • INDIVIDUAL STUDENT SCORES • For each test, each student earns a scaled score between 150-600. Each correct question is worth approximately 3 scale points. Based on these scores, students are ranked in five categories of performance, ranging from:
SCHOOL-WIDE SCORES: The COMBINED scores of ALL students in a school results in the school’s API (Academic Performance Index.) These scores range from 200-1000 with API scores between 1 and 10. The goal for ALL schools is to reach 800+. • Mission Bay High API History • 2007 = 610 • 2008 = 633 • 2009 = 662 • 2010 = 674 • 2011 = 694 • Goal 720
