  2. CBDD Overview • Established July 2001 as financially self-sustaining unit under WSU Extension • 12 Employees • Support of 19 faculty from 5 WSU Colleges • Scope includes local, national and international projects • Attracted $8.0 million outside funding in first three years

  3. CBDD Focus on IT Applications IT has potential to bridge multiple divides: • social • economic • political inclusion • cultural Broad-based deployment of IT by itself is not adequate to bridge these divides

  4. Program Areas • Best Practices in Teaching and Learning • Community and International Development • Youth Leadership in IT • Expansion of Jobs and Business Opportunities • Enhancing Public Safety and Security

  5. Best Practices in Teaching and Learning CBDD facilitating start-up of six new Washington State High Tech High Schools • $2.3 million Gates grant • Extension partnership with WSU College of Education • Innovative school community collaboration in effective teaching and learning

  6. Community &International Development University partnerships throughout Africa with new degree programs in IT regulation and policy • $3.5 million USAID-Leland Initiative grant • 17 nations represented in Gaborone, Botswana curriculum launch • Building international network of regulators and academics

  7. Youth Leadership in IT WSU 4-H youth leading technology development within their communities • 11 new public-use computer labs managed by 4-H youth • Innovative technology projects in robotics, computerized textiles and multi-media • Deployment of cutting edge mobile youth technology lab (one of two in the nation)

  8. Expansion of Jobs and Business Opportunities • Created 49 new telework jobs in Colville, Washington • Developed on-line training curriculum for teleworkers • Developed rural community resource kit • Governor’s Award for Best Practices in Workforce Development, 2002

  9. Enhancing Public Safety and Security • Partnership with the ComCARE Alliance • Facilitating systems for shared real-time emergency data crossing jurisdictional silos

  10. The Future of WSU CBDD • Financially self-sustainable IT application outreach initiatives • Funding for major expansion of supporting research projects by July 2004 • By 2007, fully integrated outreach research and teaching program
