General Information • Appalachian mountains are located in eastern North America • They were formed about 470 million years ago • The peak mountain is Mount Mitchell which has an elevation of2,037m. • These old mountains have been eroded a lot over the past millions of years.
The Land shape • The mountain range spreads from Newfoundland, Canada to Alabama, U.S.A. • The length of the Appalachian mountains is 2400km • It’s width varies from 160 to 480 kilometers wide depending on the location. • The peak of the mountain range is located at mount. Mitchell elevated at 2,037m.
Minerals and Rocks found there • The mountains is mostly made out of sedimentary and igneous/volcanic rocks. • Some minerals that could be found there are silver, anthracite coal as well as bituminous coal, some gold, zinc iron, lead.
Soil • The type of soil found in most of the Appalachian is leached soil, this maybe because of the erosions that occurred there • However, the thin layer of soil found there is fertile enough to support the growth of many plants
Climate • The Appalachian climate is affected by two ocean currents. The Labrador current (cold)and the gulf stream (warm water) • The northern part of the mountain has long, extremely cold winters and cool short summers. • The weather varies a lot when it comes to elevation the higher you are the colder it gets the difference is about 12 degrees C
Climate • The Appalachian mountain range has a maritime climate being close to the Atlantic ocean. • The annual precipitation is 890mm in the valleys and up to 2040 mm on the highest peaks.

vegetation • This region is heavily forested with coniferous and deciduous trees • In the central chain of mountains, high elevations and strong maritime influences forest dominated by conifers.
Industries • Agriculture: it is one of the main industries in this region, there are about 47 million acres of farmland to work on this industry • Logging: this industry employed more than 100 thousand people in some parts of the region • Coal mining: the mining industry employs about 9% of the Appalachian workforce. With over 160,000 km2 of coal fields
Tourism • Tourism is the main industry in the Appalachian mountain, it accounts for $30 billion and over 600,000 jobs. • The Appalachian mountains have multiple activities to experience such as golf, horseback riding, sleigh rides, mountain biking, hiking and many more.
Tourism • The Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC) is the main organization that runs and leads 7000 activities each year with 2700 volunteers.
Key cities • This region can be divided into three systems • 1. Northern:Gaspe, Quebec which lies on the range and Quebec city, Quebec which lies beside the mountain range. • 2. Central: small portion of New york-New Jersey highlands and a big portion of Blue Ridge and Ohio. • 3. Southern: the Appalachian mountain range here includes Lexington, Tennessee and ends at Birmingham, Alabama U.S.A.
