  2. Reading - Skimming • Skim the title & layout (text type) • Read the 1st sentence of each paragraph • Jot down the key idea for each paragraph • Find out the writer’s point of view

  3. Reading - scanning • Read the Qns to find out the information you need • Locate the paragraph where the answer is • Read for the specific information

  4. True / False / Not given Qns • Scan the text for the exact location • Look for specific words & phrases • Pay attention to: ‘all’, ‘most’, ‘only’, ‘a few’, etc. • Negative words: ‘not’, ‘none’, ‘won’t’, ‘never’, can’t’, etc. • Synonyms (cheap inexpensive, low-priced) • Antonyms (reasonably priced expensive, costly, high-priced)

  5. Qns about purpose / text type • Skim & scan the article • Know the audience of the text • X find the answer in one paragraph / section • Must understand several paragraphs / the whole text • Possible purpose: to persuade / to inform / to promote / to advertise / to share opinion / to entertain, etc.

  6. Matching summary sentences • Identify the main ideas of a paragraph • Match the obvious choice first • Topic sentences may be helpful

  7. Completing a cloze passage • Pay attention to the key words: nouns / adjectives / adverbs / verbs, etc. • Focus on either side of the gap • Look for word(s) in the text • Change the part of speech / tenses if necessary

  8. Giving short responses • Avoid copying chunks from the text • Answer each part of the question (yes / no + (2 / 3 ) reasons) • Check your grammar

  9. Writing • Read the instructions before writing • Read for the purpose of writing • Focus on the genre (layout, tone, language to be used) • Control the no. of words you write • Proofread your work (agreement / tenses)

  10. Writing - preparation • Revise the vocabularies for each theme • Revise the genre covered before • Focus on the topic sentences & connectives • Revise the sentence patterns • Focus on the layout (may refer to templates in Listening Bk)

  11. Listening • Follow the instructions • Read the situation, highlight information • Read the tasks to be done, highlight the instructions • Focus on the key words / phrases

  12. Listening – short tasks • Spelling must be correct. • Capital / small letter is OK, except for proper nouns. • No extra information should be given. • Dates: 11/4, 11th April, 11 Apr., 11-4, April 11. • Am / pm should be included in Time

  13. Listening – long tasks • Highlight the necessary reading materials • Read Data File & locate the tasks • Read for instructions for writing tasks • Number the areas / points to be covered

  14. Look for answers in data file, number the answers • Pay attention to the note sheet before the recording • Focus on the key words / headings • The recording may not be in the same order • Use short forms / symbols for jotting down notes

  15. Format / layout:Letters (formal / informal) address and dates? [Dear Sir / madam, Yours faithfully] [Dear Mr. Lee, Yours sincerely]Report (heading, subheadings?)Article (title required?)

  16. Paragraphing • Refer to the points required for writing tasks • Spelling and capitalisation must be correct • Avoid massive copying • Proper ending (signature + name?)

  17. Speaking – Individual presentation • Be punctual • Pay attention to the topic & the spider-web • Use the wh-questions to guide yourself for extra information • Jot down key words • Relate to personal experience

  18. Think of the structure of the speech (opening  body conclusion) • Don’t aim at covering every point • Focus on the message you want to convey • Eye-contact & body gesture • Stand while presenting • Do smile & look relaxed!
