ENHANCING ARGOS TRANSMISSION PERFORMANCE DBCP XVII Technical Workshop Bill Woodward, SAI Christian Ortega, CLS
ARGOS IS FULLY OPERATIONAL WITH SECOND GENERATION INSTRUMENTS ON NOAA-15(K) and NOAA-16(L):
ARGOS SYSTEM GENERATIONS 400 bits per second 4 channels -128 dBm 20 kHz receiver bandwidth ARGOS 1 400 bits per second 8 channels -131 dBm 80 kHz receiver bandwidth ARGOS 2 400 & 4800 bits per second 12 channels -137 dBm 110 kHz receiver bandwidth 2- way communication ARGOS 3

SOME CONCLUSIONS • Freq. Shifting = Better BER for high power, long message PTTs • Freq. Shifting = Better BER for low power, short message PTTs • Freq. Shifting = More messages (more correct Ids, less competition) • Even a 5 kHz shift is beneficial (Argos 1)
TO SUM UP • Since February 2001, the system is fully operational with two Argos 2 instruments. Two more will be launched in early 2002. • Measurements will continue to be performed. • We encourage users to use the full bandwidth of the system • We are also ready to test prototypes with manufacturers.
Simulation Tool: A Case Study for the ARGO Program • ARGO requirements • Argos answer & the Simulation Tool • Application to ARGO case study • Conclusion
ARGO Requirements • Minimize surface time • Target: <30 mn • Reduce Power Consumption • Target: power cons./10 • Increase data rate • Target: 2kbytes per surfacing
Argos Uplink: Designed for Harsh Environments Platform repeats messages to ensure their reception by satellite
Increasing Data Bandwidth Kbits per sat pass Repetition period 90 s 60s 60 s 90 s
Argos Answer to Argo Requirements Enhance the Argos one-way bandwidth performance • Work on repetition rate, frequency channeling to reduce surface time and power consumption Use Argos Downlink to allow: • Rendez-vous with Satellite (surface time) • Ephemeris broadcasting • Transmit only when Satellite is above (power) • Prediction of Satellite pass time and duration • Transfer of More Data (more samples) • Reducing redundant Tx: Interactive data collection • NEED FOR SIMULATION TOOL
Conclusion • Addressing new demanding applications requires a higher level of expertise on the Argos System, • To keep the system Simple, we plan to help Users and Manufacturers to define Best Transmission Strategies • Comprehensive Simulation Tools are being developed • So… Just ask!
