Constitutional Act 1791 • Elected Legislative Assembly with limited power – tried to avoid another revolution • Upper Canada = English • Lower Canada = French
Constitutional Act 1791 • Local elite had all the power • Voters had no real power • This leads to rebellions later on (1837)
War of 1812 • July 12, 1812 – army of Americans marches into BNA to try to push the British out
Causes of the War of 1812 • By 1812, Britain and France had been at war for almost 20 years! • Ports blockaded • Americans became angry: • they could not trade • their ships were being searched for British deserters
Causes of the War of 1812 • Why Americans wanted war: • War Hawks wanted rich farmland in BNA • Fear that BNA would ally with the Natives who were resisting western expansion • Americans wanted the British to treat them as equals, not children – a sovereign nation
Heroine • Laura Secord • Overheard Americans discussion a surprise attack • Decides to warn British commander Fitzgibbon • Walked 23 km through forests and fields! • British won the battle because they were prepared
Tecumseh • Wanted to protect native lands from the Americans • Allied with the British • Helped the British take Detroit and take a stand at the Thames River • Died in that battle • With him died the Native hope of their own separate territory
