HISTOLOGY • Biology of Tissues • Understanding the structure and function of tissues will help you understand the structure and function of the entire body
Types of Tissue • Several Subtypes in the body but 4 main types of tissues • Epithelial • Connective • Muscle • Nervous
EPITHELIAL • Function: covers and protects the body; lines cavities; functions in absorption, secretion and excretion; glandular activity • Structure: form in either sheets or glands • Examples in the body: skin; lining of Respiratory, digestive, reproductive tracts; glands http://www.hartnell.edu/tutorials/biology/images/Epithelial_types.jpg
CONNECTIVE • Function: support body structure; transport substances • Structure: sparsely arranged containing structural fibers • Examples: bone; cartilage; tendon; ligaments; blood; fat http://www.eoearth.org/files/123901_124000/123959/250px-Tissue-fig-3.gif
MUSCLE • Function: movement of body and organs; production of heat • Structure: long fibrous cells • Examples: heart; muscles in head, neck, arms, etc; organ muscles such as stomach http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/images/ency/fullsize/19917.jpg
NERVOUS • Function: communication; regulation of body function • Structure: many cell types • Examples: brain, spinal cord, nerves, sensory organs http://encyclopedia.lubopitko-bg.com/images/Nervous%20tissue1.jpg
Embryonic Tissue Development • Four major tissue types develop early in embryonic development (within the first 2 months of development) • Blastocyst: hollow ball of cells • Implants in uterus and within 2 weeks primary germ layers have developed • Endoderm, Ectoderm, Mesoderm • Called Gastrulation • Each germ layer develops into different systems
Ectoderm • Epidermis • Lining of mouth, anus, nostrils • Sweat and sebaceous glands • Hair • Tooth enamel • Nervous system • Sensory parts of eyes, nose, ear
Mesoderm • Muscles • Bone • Cartilage • Blood • Lining of Blood Vessels • Dermis of skin • Organs of Excretory and Reproductive system • Connective Tissue
Endoderm • Lining of digestive system and respiratory system • Portions of liver and pancreas • Urinary bladder • Lining of urethra • Thyroid, parathyroid, thymus
