Feedback on African Wind Energy Association Conference Cape Town 28- 30 May 2012
General Comments Poor turnout Very few exhibitors Only two OEM’s (Suzlon/ABB) Few foreign presenters
Some Observations • Worldwide Renewables development huge - “…SA not to be scared of 15%” • Renewables to reach 52 GW by 2025 (IRP) • Eskom to reach 70 000 MW by 2030 (IRP) • Wind to contribute 1300 MW • Off grid – small PPS’s – significant contribution (Rural communities) • At least 400 MW per annum output warrants a facility • Costs of Renewables underestimated • SA at ‘Peak Coal’ – 2050 • Nuclear phasing out worldwide??
Manufacturing Opportunities (Wind) • Tower construction • Blades • Gearbox/maintenance • Generation • Transmission • Export lines • Sub stations, etc. • Ancillary products • Interconnection • Energy storage • Batteries • Fuel cells/hydrogen
Other developments • Wave energy • US research • 770 MW starting 2014 • CSP • 1 GW by 2030 • Underestimated potential • Almost 100% localisation capacity
Challenges in Wind Energy • Land allocation/Regulations • EIA’s • Grid integration • ‘Own Build’ capacity • New Transmission infrastructure • Logistics (Transport) • Geographical balance • ‘Power to the People’
